Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Fatima,

I hope you are doing well, and it has been a long time since we met. I am more than happy to share with you about the new sport that suits your personality and interests. I will definitely recommend you go with table tennis, as it suits your interests.

I know about one of the best institutions, which is halfway from your home to work. I highly recommend you take admission to this center, as it has top-notch facilities and the best mentors. You will get a flexible schedule according to your requirements and a significant amount of time. The name of the institution is Surat table tennis center.

I am planning to join this institution, and why not join it together? I will be happy to come with you. Let me know when we should join this institution, and we can start playing there.

Take care; see you soon.

Best regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly recommend table tennis, explain how to learn it by suggesting a specific institution, and propose learning it together. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal register throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing enough detail to satisfy the task requirements. The structure is logical, and the purpose of the email is clear from the beginning. To improve, you could add a little more personal detail or descriptive language to make the recommendation feel more authentic and engaging.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The email is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your train of thought easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'as,' 'which,' and 'and' to link your sentences. While the flow is generally smooth, the transition between the recommendation and the specific details of the institution could be slightly more refined. Using a wider variety of linking words or phrases would help improve the overall cohesion and make the writing feel more sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'top-notch facilities,' 'mentors,' and 'flexible schedule' effectively. The language is natural and appropriate for the context of an informal email. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more varied and precise vocabulary to describe your feelings or the benefits of the sport, rather than relying on common phrases like 'suits your interests' multiple times.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I know about one of the best institutions, which is halfway from your home to work.' The grammar is generally accurate, and your punctuation is correct. There are no major errors that cause confusion. To improve, aim to incorporate a broader range of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences (e.g., 'If we join together, we will be able to...') or passive voice constructions, to demonstrate greater control and flexibility in your writing.
