Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses all three bullet points: recommending a sport, explaining how to learn it, and suggesting learning together. However, the response is under the 150-word minimum, which negatively impacts the development of ideas. While the recommendation of 'Martin sports club' and the suggestion to learn swimming are clear, the explanation of how to learn is somewhat brief. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend, but the lack of sufficient length prevents a more thorough exploration of the points, leading to a lower score in this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The email is organized into short paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical. For example, the transition 'However' is used incorrectly to introduce a new point rather than a contrast. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'that club' and 'there', which makes the flow of information feel slightly disjointed. The overall progression of ideas is present but could be improved with more varied linking words and better sentence-to-sentence connections.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, often relying on simple structures. There are several spelling errors, such as 'alrady', 'leary', 'swiming', 'polietly', 'survilience', and 'disiaunt', which occasionally impede readability. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'indoor and outdoor activities' and 'experienced trainer', the range is limited. To improve, the student should focus on accurate spelling and expanding their range of collocations to express ideas more precisely.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex sentences, but grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in verb tense and agreement, such as 'I hope you find well', 'I am suggest you', and 'I alrady join'. Punctuation is also problematic, with several comma splices and missing articles. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic sentence structures limits the score. The student needs to focus on subject-verb agreement and correct verb forms.
