Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Krunal,

I hope you are doing well. It's been a while since we had talked last time. I am writing this letter to you to give you some suggestions about learning a new sport.

I would like to suggest you to learn bowling which was not so popular in the past. This sport is definitely for you as you prefer to play with small group of people. Moreover, to play we needs quick response and power grip to hold stick which you already have by playing cricket.

To learn this sport, I will recommend you to join bowling club. The club is close to your home in the downtown area so, it will be more convenient for you to attend classes.

Furthermore, I also want to join you to learn this game. As it's been a while since we played together. It would be fun to recreate our old memories.

Let me know what you want to decide about this game. I cannot wait to see you again.

Kind regards,

Pragati

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You recommended bowling, explained how to learn it by joining a local club, and suggested learning it together. The tone is appropriate for an informal email to a friend. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though the explanation of the sport's mechanics (e.g., 'power grip to hold stick') is slightly confusing as bowling does not typically involve a stick. Overall, the task requirements are fully met with a clear purpose and consistent tone throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'As it's been a while', which help to connect your thoughts. However, the transition between sentences could be smoother in some places to improve the flow. The use of referencing is generally clear, and the overall structure is appropriate for an informal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'downtown area' and 'convenient'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'recreate our old memories' (which should be 'rekindle' or 'revisit') and the confusion regarding the equipment used in bowling. While these do not impede communication, using more precise collocations would elevate your score. The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'since we had talked last time' (should be 'since we last talked') and 'we needs quick response' (subject-verb agreement error). Additionally, 'I would like to suggest you to learn' is slightly unnatural; 'I would like to suggest that you learn' or 'I suggest you take up' would be better. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate. You have sufficient control to communicate effectively.
