Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Aman,

I hope that you are well. I am writing to tell you about a new sport that you should learn.

Although I do not know too much about your choices related to sports, I still recommend you to learn how to play cricket. As you see that this is a very popular sport of my country, and this is also crucial for you physical strength because lots of physical efforts are needed to play this, along with gives you time to enjoy with yourself after you finish your class.

There are so many ways to learn this sport, but I would suggest you that you must join the cricket academy so that you are taught with a proper technique by experts. There are two well-known academies in our area so you can join one of them according to your convenience and financial budget.

I share my feelings with you that I am also interested in learning cricket so we would enroll together in the academy. I will try to manage my working time so that I can spend the rest my free time with you and enjoy learning a new sport together.

I look forward to hearing from you

Kind regards

Sandeep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly recommend cricket, explain the learning process by suggesting a local academy, and propose learning together. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific detail about why cricket is particularly suitable for your friend's personality or interests, rather than just focusing on general physical benefits.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The email is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'along with', and 'so that' to connect your thoughts. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. For instance, the start of the second and third paragraphs could be linked more fluidly to the previous points. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the use of paragraphing is appropriate for an informal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'convenience', 'financial budget', and 'physical strength'. While the vocabulary is functional and allows for clear communication, it is somewhat basic. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'choices related to sports' (better: 'sporting preferences') and 'enjoy with yourself' (better: 'enjoy yourself'). To improve, try to incorporate more natural collocations and idiomatic expressions that are common in informal English, which would help your writing sound more fluent and less like a direct translation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'I still recommend you to learn' (should be 'I recommend that you learn'), 'crucial for you physical strength' (should be 'your'), and 'along with gives you time' (should be 'along with giving you time'). Additionally, there are minor issues with article usage and preposition placement. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and prepositional phrases will help improve your accuracy.
