Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sara,

I am fine and hope you are also doing well. I just come to know that you are looking for a new sport to learn. I really admire your passion of sports as you are already adept in the table tennis and now you are looking for a new one.

I would recommend you to learn basket ball. As you are new in this town, I would like to tell you that there are two reputable sports club and you can enroll in any one. I have my personal learning experience there. The coaches of both the clubs are very able and skillful. In addition, the club is nearby of your home. It will convenient for you to go there by walk. I am also thinking to join again the basket ball, because it is very beneficial for health to play some kind of sport.

I hope you will appreciate my suggestion. Looking forward for your reply.

Yours sincerely,

Sobia.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: recommending a sport (basketball), explaining how to learn it (enrolling in local clubs), and suggesting that you learn it together. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention the clubs are reputable and the coaches are skillful, providing a bit more detail about the training process or why basketball is a great choice would have strengthened the response. Overall, the task is fulfilled clearly and effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The email is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'because' to link ideas. However, the paragraphing is a bit clumped; the body of the email could be better structured by separating the recommendation and the learning method into distinct paragraphs. Additionally, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Improving the flow between sentences would help the text read more naturally and elevate the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, such as 'reputable', 'adept', and 'beneficial'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'nearby of your home' (should be 'near your home') and 'go there by walk' (should be 'go there on foot'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, it lacks the variety and precision required for a higher band. Focusing on more natural collocations will help improve your lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

Your writing shows a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I just come to know' (should be 'I have just come to know'), 'passion of sports' (should be 'passion for sports'), and 'join again the basket ball' (should be 'join the basketball club again'). These errors are frequent but do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, you should work on verb tense consistency and preposition usage, and aim for more error-free complex sentences.
