IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Your English-speaking friend who lives in your town has asked for your advice about learning a new sport. Write an email to your friend. In your email:
- recommend a new sport that would be suitable for your friend to learn
- explain how your friend could learn this sport
- suggest that you both learn this sport together
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear John,
I hope you are doing great. I'm glad to hear that you are willing to learn a new sport. I will recommend Soccer, as it is enjoyable, physically demanding and pocket friendly; since, it only needs a ball as an investment to start with.
Learning this sport can be very easy! You can do something like wall practise, where you just hit the ball and it bounces back, and, then you control the ball and hit it again. With repetitions, you will gain more control over the ball and that will help you in the real game. Secondly, try doing some basic drills which you can learn from the internet.
I have recently joined a monthly membership for my local club for the same. We can learn this sport together and having a friend in the learning phase will help both of us in staying motivated throughout the process. I've also heard that there will be selections for the players for our university soccer team next month, and then get trained by our university coach.
See you Monday!
Eric

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You recommended soccer, provided clear instructions on how to learn it (wall practice and online drills), and proposed learning together. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the prompt. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail on the 'how to learn' section, perhaps by mentioning specific types of online resources or local community groups, which would further extend your ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The email is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use cohesive devices such as 'secondly', 'and then', and 'for the same' to link your thoughts. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, such as the use of 'and, then' with unnecessary punctuation. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the introduction, the advice, and the final suggestion. The flow is generally smooth, and the relationship between ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for an informal email. Phrases like 'physically demanding', 'pocket friendly', and 'staying motivated' are used accurately. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is positive. However, there are minor issues with word choice, such as 'wall practise' (which should be 'practice' as a noun) and 'selections for the players' (which is slightly unnatural; 'tryouts' would be more idiomatic). Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional-like structure in the first paragraph and the compound sentences in the second. While there are some minor punctuation errors, such as the unnecessary comma in 'and, then', the majority of your sentences are error-free. Your control over verb tenses is consistent, and the grammar does not impede communication. To improve, ensure that you distinguish between noun and verb forms (e.g., 'practice' vs 'practise') and refine the use of commas to avoid breaking the flow of your sentences.
