Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Gurpreet,

How've you been? It's been two weeks since we last caught up. I got your letter yesterday. I am so delighted that you're finally showing some interest in acquiring sport skills.

Since you've asked me for a suggestion about the sport, I would like to recommend you cricket. Cricket is a very popular sport especially in India. Owing to your friendly and collaborative nature, I believe, it'll suit you the best. Additionally, it'll teach you skills like teamwork, communication and cooperation.

Although there is no official place in town where you could learn cricket, the most effective and cost free method is to play with local Indian boys in the evening in the Kin playground. Nearly 20-25 boys gather there around 5pm everyday to play cricket. Even though there are not professionals, they'll definitely be able to teach you the foundation of the game along with some tricks to handle the pressure situations. Furthermore, you can practice with them regularly as well.

What's more, I was also planning to join those players to enhance my physical movements. Because my lifestyle is mostly sedentary due to my office work, I also want to introduce new physical activities in my routine to be fit and healthy. How about we two join together? We'll get each others company. Tell me, how you think about my plan.

I hope to hear from you soon!

Love,

Komal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You recommended cricket, provided a clear method for learning it by joining local players, and suggested learning together. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant. The response is coherent and maintains a friendly, personal tone throughout, which is essential for a General Training Task 1. You have fully met the requirements of the task by providing sufficient detail for each point, ensuring the reader understands your suggestions clearly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The email is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a suitable closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Although', 'Furthermore', and 'What's more' to link your ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points of the letter. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the recommendation to the learning method and finally the suggestion to join together. The referencing is clear, and the flow of the letter is natural and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the task, such as 'collaborative nature', 'sedentary', and 'foundation of the game'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'cost free' (should be 'cost-free') and 'Even though there are not professionals' (should be 'there are no professionals'). However, these do not impede communication. You use a variety of expressions to convey your meaning effectively. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more idiomatic expressions or slightly more sophisticated collocations to enhance the natural flow of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'I would like to recommend you cricket' (should be 'recommend cricket to you') and 'How about we two join together?' (should be 'How about we join together?'). Additionally, 'get each others company' should be 'get each other's company'. Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your meaning is always clear. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence variety shows a good level of control over English grammar.
