IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Your English-speaking friend who lives in your town has asked for your advice about learning a new sport. Write an email to your friend. In your email:

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Rutvik,

I hope you are doing well! I am writing to suggest that you learn an extra sport, ‘Swimming’.

The aforementioned sport will be beneficial for you because it improves your physical fitness and confidence. It would be easy for you, as you are in the center of town and have many swimming pools and sports facilities near your house.

Even though it is advisable to enroll in coaching with an expert trainer, you could learn this by practicing it yourself. First, a coach will teach you how to get used to water and control your breathing while going up and down on the water surface. Besides that, he will also show you how to balance your body and use training boards at a beginner level.

I am also planning to get coaching on this sport, so we can sign up together for swimming classes offered by ‘Fish Sports Club’, where discounts and promotions are going on.

I am waiting to hear a positive response from you to start our new journey of learning a new sport.

Yours lovingly,

Ravi Prajapati.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You recommended swimming, explained how to learn it through coaching and self-practice, and proposed learning together. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the 'how to learn' section by providing more specific details about the process or the local facilities mentioned, which would further develop your response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The email is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Even though', 'First', and 'Besides that' to link your ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for the task type. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the relationship between the recommendation and the suggestion to join together is clear. The structure is coherent throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. Phrases like 'aforementioned sport', 'physical fitness', and 'beginner level' are used correctly. However, some word choices are slightly formal or repetitive, such as 'extra sport' or 'get coaching'. To improve, try to incorporate more natural collocations and a wider variety of descriptive adjectives to make the email sound more authentic and engaging for a friend.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Even though it is advisable to enroll in coaching... you could learn this by practicing it yourself.' Most of your sentences are grammatically accurate. There are minor issues, such as the phrasing 'going up and down on the water surface' which is slightly unnatural, and the use of 'Yours lovingly' is a bit unusual for a friend (usually 'Best wishes' or 'Yours sincerely' is preferred). Overall, your control of grammar is good and does not impede communication.
