Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Joemar,
How are you? I hope you’re doing good. I am writing because you personally requested for an advice about learning a new sport when we unexpectedly bumped into each other yesterday.
These past few weeks, there is a sport called ‘Pickle Ball’ that is becoming popular to people who want to be physically active and who aim to spend their leisure time on sports. I believe it suits you better than other activities as you are busy mostly at work during weekdays and this sport offers you flexibility as you can play it anytime by just booking a place in advance.
Moreover, Learning this sport would be easy as this is a mix of tennis, badminton and table tennis. You just need to hit the ball over the net and just make it land to your opponent’s court. It’s about aiming consistency not power.
This sport requires two person to play. Therefore, I would like to suggest if we could learn and play it together. We haven’t been doing any physical activities in such a long time as we both have tight schedules, or
perhaps we can discuss it over a phone call to check our availability?
I am excited to see that this will work to both of us. I look forward to your response.
Yours faithfully,
Irish

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You recommended 'Pickle Ball', explained how to learn it by highlighting its accessibility and rules, and proposed learning it together. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task instructions. The response is clear and easy to follow, and you have maintained a consistent position throughout the letter. No parts of the task were omitted, and the purpose of the email is clear from the beginning.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your train of thought. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'In addition' to link your ideas effectively. While some transitions are quite standard, they function well to maintain the flow of the email. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the initial greeting to the recommendation, the explanation, and finally the suggestion to meet up. The use of referencing is clear, and the overall structure is coherent.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. You use specific terms related to sports, such as 'physically active', 'leisure time', and 'flexibility'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'requested for an advice' (advice is uncountable, so 'requested advice' is correct) and 'land to your opponent’s court' (should be 'land in'). However, these errors do not impede communication. You attempt to use some less common phrases, which shows a good effort to expand your lexical range. With more attention to collocations, your score in this area could improve further.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'this is a sport called... that is becoming popular to people' (should be 'popular with people') and 'requires two person' (should be 'two people'). Additionally, 'I am excited to see that this will work to both of us' is slightly unnatural; 'work for both of us' would be better. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate. You show a good grasp of sentence construction, though more variety in complex structures would enhance the quality.
