Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mike.

Hope you are doing well in your life. I am very happy about listning from you that you want to get knowledge about a new sport.

Being a sports loving person i try to do every activity to keep me active and healthy but if it comes to you i will suggest you to play cricket as it is my favourite to and i know that you will love to play it.

Learning process is very simple in this field of game you can just go to www.cricketlearning.com and there you find a tutor who can guide you according to your ability of learning. I know you are facing issues with your joint pain but you just have to tell your tutor that i have this issue in me and they will guide you accordingly.

I am already aware of some techniques of cricket but i know that i am not perfect in it and maybe i will come to you and we will learn together. I will wait for your response.

your lovingly

kaim

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: recommending a sport (cricket), explaining how to learn it (online resources/tutor), and suggesting learning together. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of how to learn is quite brief and relies on a generic website suggestion. To reach a higher band, you could expand on why cricket is a good choice for your friend specifically, perhaps mentioning the social benefits or the specific health advantages, which would provide more depth to your response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The email is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your ideas. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'but' and 'and', but the flow between sentences can feel a bit mechanical at times. The transition between the recommendation and the learning process is clear, but the overall structure could benefit from more varied linking words to improve the flow. Paragraphing is used correctly to separate the different points of the task, which is a positive feature of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'sports loving person' and 'techniques'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'get knowledge about a new sport' (better: 'learn about a new sport') and 'field of game' (better: 'sport'). To improve, try to use more precise vocabulary and avoid repeating simple words. Your spelling is mostly accurate, though the tone is occasionally slightly informal in a way that feels a bit repetitive.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you are able to communicate your meaning, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'listning from you' (should be 'hearing from you'), 'my favourite to' (should be 'my favourite too'), and 'i have this issue in me' (should be 'I have this issue'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of capital 'I' and sentence boundaries. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your sentences are correctly punctuated to avoid run-on structures.
