Student answer (Band 6.0)

Hello Sarah

I hope your are doing well and reading my letter.I m glad to recommend you a fun sport which personally I love playing since my childhood which is badminton, even it is one of my favourite sport activity.

No I am going to tell u some reasons why you should choose this game over others.Primarily its is a very easy , fun and simple rules game .Secondly its is light not to much practice needed . Lastly you can also learn it online through watching some basic videos how to serve shuttle , how to hold racket and more .

I also know one club near to my house for this game it has good reputation and also budget friendly . if u want we can join it together and practice together also we can spend quality time together and have fun memories.

Lastly playing sports is also good for your wellbeing to stay fit and heathy in the long term .I will be glad to hear from you .

Thankyou

simon

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: recommending a sport (badminton), explaining how to learn it, and suggesting you learn it together. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention learning online, you could have provided more specific details about local classes or beginner-friendly resources to fully satisfy the 'explain how' requirement. The response is clear and the purpose is evident throughout, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The email is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your ideas. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'Primarily', 'Secondly', and 'Lastly' to structure your argument. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by mechanical phrasing and some awkward transitions between sentences. The use of referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the phrase 'its is a very easy... game', where the pronoun usage is repetitive. Overall, the progression is coherent, but the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic and occasionally repetitive.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'wellbeing', 'reputation', and 'budget-friendly'. However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and informal abbreviations, such as 'u' instead of 'you' and 'its' instead of 'it is'. Some collocations are also slightly unnatural, such as 'reading my letter' (usually 'reading my email') and 'favourite sport activity'. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise vocabulary and avoid informal text-speak, which is inappropriate for an IELTS writing task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

Your writing shows a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('its is', 'your are'), missing articles ('one of my favourite sport activity'), and punctuation issues (spacing after commas and periods). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency. You should focus on proofreading for basic errors like verb forms and sentence punctuation to improve your accuracy.
