Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Rohit,

I hope you are doing great. I am writing this letter to give you some advice regarding learning a new sport.

I recommend that you learn cricket, which would be very beneficial for you and our nation. I recommend this to you because I have seen your keen interest in cricket while watching matches online. You have a lot of knowledge in that field.

You can learn this sport either by joining sports academies or by practicing at the playground on a daily basis. There are different ways to learn cricket, like by watching live matches on the grounds.

We can both learn cricket together in my backyard if you do not mind, which will help you strengthen your stamina as well as help me to stay healthy.

I give you that advice because you will become a famous sportsman, which is your childhood dream as well as your father's dream.

I can not wait to hear from you and tell me what you think about this.

Lots of love,

Harman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly recommend cricket, explain how to learn it through academies or practice, and suggest learning it together. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing a clear rationale for the recommendation. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the specific benefits of learning together or provide more descriptive detail about the learning process, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'I recommend this to you because' and 'either by... or by...' to link ideas. While the flow is clear, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive and simple. To improve, you could incorporate a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases to create a more sophisticated flow between sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'beneficial', 'keen interest', and 'stamina' correctly. The language is natural and appropriate for an informal email. However, the vocabulary is somewhat limited and relies on fairly common expressions. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise or idiomatic language, such as 'honing your skills' instead of 'practicing' or 'a fantastic opportunity' instead of 'very beneficial'. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I recommend that you learn cricket, which would be very beneficial...' and 'We can both learn cricket together in my backyard if you do not mind...'. Most of your sentences are grammatically accurate. There are minor issues, such as 'tell me what you think' which is slightly abrupt, but these do not impede meaning. To improve, aim for more varied complex structures and ensure consistent control over punctuation and verb tenses throughout the text.
