Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Patrick,

I am writing to advise you about a new sport introduced in our town. As you always wanted to enjoy an activity that will be beneficial both physically and mentally. So I have found a sport for you that match your interest. It is Martial Arts. I had visited the club 2 days before and met with their master. He explained me the purpose of martial arts and how it will be helpful for us in our daily routine. The time for the game will be 5pm to 7pm in the evening. Sunday is holiday and in rest of the days we have to be regular.

My friend, you can learn this sports in various training sessions and by practicing it. A master is there who will train us daily and we have to practice his teachings as much as we can. In the first hour, there is a daily test session of previous day teachings in which we have to show our leaning. There are 5 stages in this training phase. Each phase shall be of 2 months. After two months a test will be conducted and upon results one can be promoted to next stage.

It is a hard training sport but it has long term benefits. I am now very interested in this athletics game and want you to join with me also. The new batch is starting from the month of October. Let's register and gain a new skill.

Waiting for your response. Do response me about your final verdict on it.

Yours friendly,

Talha Tahir

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You recommended a sport (Martial Arts), explained how to learn it through training sessions and a master, and invited your friend to join you. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed; for instance, the explanation of the training stages is a bit repetitive and could have been more concise. Additionally, there are minor issues with task fulfillment regarding the flow of information, as the transition between the sport recommendation and the training details feels a bit abrupt. Overall, the response is relevant and covers the requirements well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The email is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your ideas. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'After two months' and 'In the first hour', to sequence information. However, the use of linking words is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as starting sentences with 'So' or 'And'. The referencing is generally clear, but the connection between the sentences in the second paragraph could be smoother to improve the overall flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the details of the sport, and the closing invitation.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'beneficial', 'training sessions', and 'verdict'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, you refer to martial arts as a 'game' and an 'athletics game', which is not the standard terminology. You also use 'leaning' instead of 'learning' and 'rest of the days' instead of 'the rest of the days'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary usage to reach a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'As you always wanted to enjoy...' (should be 'As you have always wanted'), 'match your interest' (should be 'matches'), and 'explained me' (should be 'explained to me'). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and verb tense consistency. While you attempt complex sentences, they often contain errors that slightly distract the reader. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions after specific verbs.
