Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear johan,

How was your day? I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to share with you a sports that you will definitely love trying.

I played billiard since I was a teenager. It was not difficult to learn. I know that we have both have asthma so this sports suits as the best. I know that we can't do excess physical activities like basketball, volleyball and football who needs extreme physical conditioning. Playing billiards is one sports that I know can be good for us. It is easily to learn, concentration and focus is the main thing to consider in playing this sport. Practicing precisition and aiming more is important to improve much faster in this kind of sport.

I would appreciate it if you consider my adviced on what kind of sport we can share our liesure time. It is more fun and easy to play. I hope that one of this day we can play billiards.

Sincerly yours,.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt: recommending a sport (billiards), explaining how to learn it, and suggesting you learn it together. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention that billiards is easy to learn, you could have provided more specific details on how to actually start, such as joining a local club or watching tutorials. The explanation regarding the health benefits (asthma) is a good personal touch, but the overall development of the points remains quite brief. To reach a higher band, ensure each point is expanded with more descriptive detail.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The email is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your message. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'I am writing this letter to' and 'I would appreciate it if'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and there is a lack of variety in linking words. Some transitions feel abrupt, such as the jump from discussing asthma to the mechanics of playing billiards. Improving the use of cohesive devices—such as 'furthermore', 'consequently', or 'in addition'—would help create a smoother progression of ideas throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your ideas clearly. You use some relevant topic-specific terms like 'physical conditioning', 'concentration', and 'leisure time'. However, there are several word-choice errors and inaccuracies, such as 'a sports' (should be 'a sport'), 'who needs' (should be 'which need'), and 'precisition' (spelling error). Additionally, the phrase 'share our liesure time' is slightly unnatural. To improve, focus on mastering basic collocations and ensuring that singular/plural forms are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('this sports suits'), incorrect verb forms ('I played billiard since I was a teenager' should be 'I have played'), and awkward phrasing ('It is easily to learn'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and the closing salutation. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to lower the score. Focusing on verb tenses and basic sentence construction will significantly improve your accuracy.
