Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Shiv,

I got your message about getting my advice regarding learning a new sport. There is a new sports center opening near the S.G road. I heard that the opening ceremony is in a week.

There will some advance sports facilities available there. One of them is football and I always wanted to learn it and I think you would like to learn it too. Some of friends from tuition also want to join and I think that we all can get the pass together so that we can get a discount as well in a group. I know that you like to communicate in English with professionals specially as you are only able to understand 2 languages. I think this center will be a good choice for you as people will come from various region and English is mandatory while learning football.

I hope to see you on next Monday at the opening ceremony.

Regards,

Pann

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt: recommending a sport (football), explaining how to learn it (joining the new sports center), and suggesting you learn it together. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. The explanation of how to learn the sport is vague, focusing more on the center's opening than on the actual process of learning. Additionally, the suggestion to learn together is mentioned, but the reasoning regarding the friend's language skills feels slightly disconnected from the main topic of sports. To improve, ensure that your ideas are more directly focused on the specific requirements of the prompt and provide more detail on the 'how' aspect of learning the sport.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The email is generally easy to follow, and there is a logical progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'and', 'so that', and 'because' to link your sentences. However, the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire body of the email is contained in one block. Using clear paragraph breaks to separate the recommendation, the explanation, and the suggestion would significantly improve the structure. Furthermore, some transitions between sentences feel a bit mechanical, and the flow could be enhanced by using a wider variety of linking words to connect your thoughts more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'opening ceremony', 'advance sports facilities', and 'mandatory'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'advance sports facilities' should be 'advanced', and 'communicate in English with professionals' is slightly unnatural in this context. You also use 'various region' instead of the plural 'various regions'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary usage. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more natural collocations and ensure that your word forms are consistently accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I know that you like to communicate...' and 'I think that we all can get the pass...'. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'There will some advance sports facilities' (missing 'be'), 'Some of friends' (missing 'my'), and 'only able to understand 2 languages' (should be 'two'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the variety of your sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher score.
