Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Yash,

I hope this letter finds you and your family in good spirits. I heard that you are willing to learn a new outdoor game. I'm writing to offer some suggetions that may help to find a new sport in our town.

Cricket is one of the most popular games in our country, and many people play this game every day with their friends and relatives. I would advise you to learn about this intrestring game as you never play it in your life. Although this game is quite physically demanding, it will help you to improve your physical, as well as mental health.

You can learn some basic about this game either joining leaning classes or playing with us everyday as we play around 6:00 p.m. everyday after work in John garaden. These are an easy ways which can help you to lean this game quickly.

Even I want to learn some advance skills, such as powerful batting and fast bowling with inswing and outswing. I am planning to join a Tendulkar Cricket Academy in coming month, so I would suggest to join this academy with me.

Thank you for trusting me. Please let me know if you need any futher information.

Best regards,

Alpesh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt in a natural, friendly tone appropriate for a general email. You clearly recommended a new sport by suggesting cricket, explaining that it is popular and offers great physical and mental health benefits. You explained how your friend could learn this sport by mentioning joining learning classes or playing together at John garden. Finally, you successfully suggested that you both learn together by inviting Yash to join the Tendulkar Cricket Academy with you next month. All bullet points are fully addressed with relevant details and clear extensions, demonstrating a strong understanding of the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The email has a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving smoothly from the opening greetings and recommendation to the learning methods and the joint invitation. Paragraphing is used appropriately with clear spacing between sections. Cohesive devices and referencing are generally well managed, such as using 'Although this game...' and 'These are an easy ways...', though some minor referencing slips occur, like 'These are an easy ways' where the plural demonstrative does not match the singular noun phrase. Overall, the message flows naturally and is easy to follow from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, such as 'physically demanding', 'relatives', and 'inswing and outswing'. There are several spelling and word-choice errors that slightly detract from the overall impression, including 'suggetions' instead of suggestions, 'intrestring' instead of interesting, 'leaning classes' instead of learning classes, 'garaden' instead of garden, 'advance skills' instead of advanced skills, and 'futher' instead of further. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication because the context remains clear throughout the email.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and concessive clauses like 'Although this game is quite physically demanding, it will help you to improve...'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present, including 'help to find a new sport', 'as you never play it in your life' (should be present perfect), 'some basic about this game' (should be basics), 'either joining leaning classes or playing' (faulty correlative structure, should be 'either by joining or by playing'), and 'suggest to join this academy' (should be suggest that you join). Despite these frequent minor errors, they rarely impede overall communication.
