Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Priya,

I hope you're in the pink of health! Nowadays people are very interested in sports to maintain there good health. There are lots of sports academies in my town but the most popular sport is football that I personally like. I'd also suggest you to join that.

Although there are plenty of football academies nearby your house, the most famous is Anytime Football Club. You can join this academy, and its not that much expensive as well as the staff is very cooperative. Firstly, they will provide you all necessary guidance regarding the sport.

I was also thinking to join the football academy, and it will be perfect if we both join. It can be very helpful for both of us by supporting each other as well as allowing us to spend some more time together. So, instead of staying at home and wasting time on mobile phones we can do something beneficial for our health.

I really encourage you to join this sport.

With love,

Manpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively covers all bullet points required by the task prompt. You successfully recommended a specific sport, football, by mentioning the 'Anytime Football Club'. You explained how your friend could learn this sport by noting that the academy's staff is cooperative and will provide all necessary guidance. Furthermore, you clearly suggested that you both learn this sport together, highlighting the mutual benefits of supporting each other and spending time together. The tone is appropriately informal and friendly throughout, matching the requirements of General Training Task 1. All parts are well-developed, and the ideas flow naturally from the recommendation to the details of learning and the joint proposal. The word count requirement is fully met, and the letter format is correctly observed from the opening salutation to the sign-off.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

Your letter has a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, with the first paragraph introducing the recommendation, the second explaining how to learn the sport, and the third proposing that you learn it together. You make good use of cohesive devices to link your ideas, such as 'Although there are plenty of...', 'Firstly', and 'So, instead of...'. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall arrangement allows the reader to follow your thoughts effortlessly. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate distinct points. While cohesion is sometimes a bit straightforward, it successfully serves the purpose of an informal letter to a friend.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, suitable for an informal letter. You use idiomatic language successfully right at the beginning with 'in the pink of health'. Other lexical choices such as 'academies', 'cooperative', and 'beneficial' show an adequate range for the task. However, there are a few minor lexical inaccuracies or awkward phrasings, such as writing 'maintain there good health' instead of 'their' and using 'its not that much expensive' which is slightly informal and unidiomatic. Despite these minor errors, your vocabulary allows you to convey your message clearly and appropriately for the context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses introduced by 'although', 'that', and 'which'. There are several error-free sentences, and your punctuation is generally sound. However, a few grammatical and mechanical errors persist. For instance, there is a spelling mistake with 'there' instead of 'their' ('maintain there good health'), a missing apostrophe in 'its' ('its not that much expensive'), and a slight punctuation slip in 'I'd also suggest you to join that' (which would be better phrased as 'suggest that you join'). These errors do not impede communication, and the overall control of grammar is good enough to support clear expression.
