IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Your English-speaking friend who lives in your town has asked for your advice about learning a new sport. Write an email to your friend. In your email:

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear John,

Hope you are doing well. I've received your mail and I'm glad that you want to explore and learn a new sport. I would highly recommend you to learn Cricket.

Cricket doesn't requires constant running and is easy to understand all the rules of the game. It will be suitable for you, as it is a very exciting and fun game and you don't have to spend too much time or money into it.

If you would like to learn from the basics, you can join the local club. The coach is truly amazing and highly engaging. It would be easy for you to learn practically while playing and practising the actual game rather than following instructions. Moreover, you can also watch live games on the local playground. It would be beneficial for you to learn different aspects of the game.

If you'd like I could join you next week. I am free for couple of weeks because my vacation starts from Friday. We can join the club together or I can teach you the basics of the game. It would be fun playing together, let me know what you think.

Best wishes,

Utsav

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully covered all bullet points of the task in a natural and appropriate tone. You clearly recommended a sport ('I would highly recommended you to learn Cricket'), explained how your friend could learn it by joining a local club or watching live games, and suggested learning together ('If you'd like I could join you next week'). The register is appropriately friendly and informal for a General Training email. The ideas are well-extended and directly address the prompts. There are no omissions or misunderstandings of the task requirements. Because all parts of the prompt are fully and clearly addressed with good supporting detail, this performance firmly meets the Band 7 and touches upon Band 8 descriptors for task achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

Your letter is logically organised with a clear overarching progression. You begin with an appropriate greeting, move smoothly into the recommendation, provide details on learning methods, offer to join your friend, and close with a friendly sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as placing the learning methods in one paragraph and the joint proposal in another. You use cohesive devices adequately, such as 'Moreover' and 'If you would like', though referencing can occasionally feel slightly formulaic. Overall, the text flows well from sentence to sentence and paragraph to paragraph, making it very easy for the reader to follow your argument and suggestions, which comfortably places your cohesion at a solid Band 7 level.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate and functional range of vocabulary suitable for an informal email. Phrases like 'explore and learn a new sport', 'practically while playing', and 'aspects of the game' show that you can express your thoughts clearly. However, there are some minor lexical and collocation inaccuracies, most notably 'Cricket doesn't requires' (where the plural verb form is incorrect after 'doesn't') and awkward preposition use in 'spend too much time or money into it' (instead of 'on it'). While you attempt some less common vocabulary, these minor word-choice and grammatical-collocation slips prevent a higher score, placing your lexical resource firmly in the Band 6 territory.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional clauses effectively ('If you would like to learn...', 'If you'd like I could join you...'). Your punctuation and sentence boundaries are generally well controlled. However, there are a few notable grammatical errors that detract from accuracy, such as 'Cricket doesn't requires' (subject-verb agreement error with auxiliary 'does') and 'free for couple of weeks' (missing article 'a'). Despite these errors, they do not impede communication, and the meaning remains completely clear throughout the letter. Your grammar displays a reliable mix of structures with frequent error-free sentences, corresponding well to the Band 6.5 or 7 descriptors; a 6.5 is awarded to reflect the balance of complex structures and persistent minor errors.
