Student answer (Band 6.0)

Hii raman,

How are u ? i hope u are doing great. I am writing this letter to u about the sport that u should have to try in our city.

Actuall, i am punjabi and our famous and well - known game is kabbadi. I think this game is good for the overall development of our mind and body as wellas for this game a person needs to maintain his weight too. This game is not only popular in punjab but some people play in other nations too.The skills for this game is flexibility, stamina and grip of your hands.

To get the trainig of this game is to enroll yourself in coaching classes. There are so many coaches avaiable in the city which helps people to get trained. Moreover, u can do practice in the government school with some youngsters there in the evening.

I also have a keen interest in this sport but am not getting enough time to focus on this time. I will start soon the coaching for this ,if u want to join me,it will be beneficial for both of us to do it together.

I hope you will like my suggestion and join this sport with me.

see u soon.

your friend,

kaman.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the prompt. You begin your email with a friendly greeting and recommend a specific sport, which is kabaddi. You then clearly explain how your friend can learn this sport by enrolling in coaching classes and practicing with youngsters in a government school. Finally, you suggest that you both learn the sport together, noting that it will be beneficial for both of you. Although the style is somewhat informal and incorporates informal spelling such as 'u' and 'Hii', the requirements of General Training Task 1 are fully satisfied. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, earning a solid band score for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, with each paragraph addressing a different aspect of the prompt. There is a clear overall progression from the introduction and recommendation to the learning methods and the final proposal to join together. Cohesive devices are used to link ideas, such as 'Moreover' and 'if u want to join me'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally impacted by informal layout and punctuation choices. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas, ensuring the reader can easily follow the message from beginning to end.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, though it tends to be quite basic and informal. You have attempted some less common items such as 'overall development', 'flexibility', 'stamina', and 'beneficial'. However, there are noticeable limitations and spelling errors, such as 'Actuall' instead of 'Actually', 'trainig' instead of 'training', and 'avaiable' instead of 'available'. While these lexical errors do not impede communication, they restrict the lexical score to a Band 5.5, reflecting a mix of everyday words and some specific sports-related vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I think this game is good for the overall development of our mind and body as well as for this game a person needs to maintain his weight too.' There are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text, including lowercase letters at the beginning of sentences ('Actuall', 'The skills for this game is...'), non-standard abbreviations ('u' instead of 'you'), and minor prepositional inaccuracies ('focus on this time' instead of 'focus on this at this time'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear, and communication is not impeded.
