Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Ramesh,

I am writing this letter to suggest you new sport yto learn in your summer holidays. I remember our conversation from last time where you told me that you are confused and not able to pick a new sport to learn.

I think you should learn badminton in your holidays. I know you love games which require strategic intelligence. Badminton is one of those games. Moreover, it requires great stamina and quick thinking and it will suit your forte.

You can go to Ranjit stadium to learn badminton. Also, I recently got the news that olympic coach is coming to start his coaching classes in the stadium for 2 months. This will be the best oppurtunity for you to learn badminton.

My family is also pushing me to learn badminton and start playing nationals. So, I can join the coaching with you and we both can communte together. Moreover, we can be each others training partners and help each other to improve stance and shine in the games.

I am waiting for your positive response.

Warm regards,

Tarunjeet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response covers all three bullet points of the task clearly and effectively. You successfully recommend badminton to your friend Ramesh, explaining that it suits his strategic intelligence and need for stamina. You clearly explain how he can learn it by mentioning the Ranjit stadium and the upcoming coaching classes with an Olympic coach. Finally, you successfully suggest that you both learn the sport together by proposing to commute together and become each other's training partners. Your tone is appropriately friendly and the purpose of the email is fully achieved throughout the text. The ideas are well-developed and all parts of the prompt are given adequate attention, making this a strong performance for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The email is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, following standard email conventions. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the prompt, such as the recommendation, learning details, and the joint participation. Paragraphing is used appropriately to guide the reader through the text. You make good use of cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'Also' to link your ideas together smoothly. Referencing is clear throughout, and the progression of information feels natural and easy to follow. While cohesive devices are occasionally a bit mechanical, the overall structure supports clear and coherent communication from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas with good precision. Phrases like 'strategic intelligence', 'forte', and 'training partners' show an ability to use less common lexical items appropriately. There are, however, a few minor slips and spelling errors, such as 'yto' instead of 'to' in the opening sentence and 'oppurtunity' instead of 'opportunity'. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, your vocabulary choice is flexible enough to discuss the topic clearly, and the spelling errors do not impede communication. With slightly greater attention to spelling and more varied collocation, your lexical score could be even higher.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You display a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional ideas and multi-clause sentences like 'I remember our conversation from last time where you told me that you are confused...' Grammatical control is generally quite good, with many error-free sentences. However, there are a few minor grammatical lapses, such as missing articles ('suggest you new sport' instead of 'suggest a new sport') and a minor preposition/collocation slip ('communte together' instead of 'commute together'). These errors are minor and infrequent, and they certainly do not impede communication. Your control of punctuation is also sound throughout the response.
