Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Sara,

hope you are doing well, I recieved your email yesterday, in which you asked me about my advice regarding new sports for you. As you are really good in english examination point of view, but playing practicle sports are also very essential for our health and mentle satisfaction. I suggest you, to join cricket acadmey which is located near our home town. According to my perspective, the girls should also learn about the cricket because cricket is a world wide famous sport and it is such a enjoyable game based on the team of 12 players which divides into two half like 6 is for batting and 6 for balling.

Recently, I also join that academy which is really good and we have a very experienced coach as well, who thaught us a basic and claasic ways to play cricket. So i suggest you to come this academy and learn a new sport with me.

hope you understand my opinion, I will be waiting for your joining.

best regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the prompt. You have recommended a specific sport by stating, 'I suggest you, to join cricket acadmey,' explained how she could learn it by mentioning that there is an experienced coach who teaches the basic and classic ways, and suggested that you both learn together with the phrase, 'come this academy and learn a new sport with me.' The tone is appropriately informal and friendly for an email to a friend. While some ideas like the rules of cricket are slightly inaccurate, your purpose is fully communicated and all parts of the task are adequately addressed. Therefore, this fulfills the criteria for a solid band 6.0 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The email has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure typical of a personal letter, beginning with a friendly greeting and ending with an appropriate sign-off. However, paragraphing is weak; the main body is condensed into two large blocks with a lack of clear separation between ideas. Furthermore, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or faulty, such as the run-on sentence structure in phrases like 'I suggest you, to join cricket acadmey which is located near our home town. According to my perspective...' Referencing and linking between sentences could be smoother to enhance the overall flow. These characteristics align well with a band 5.5 descriptor.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'examination,' 'essential,' 'satisfaction,' and 'experienced coach.' However, there are notable spelling errors throughout the response, such as 'recieved,' 'practicle,' 'mentle,' 'acadmey,' 'world wide,' 'thaught,' and 'claasic.' Word choice and collocation are occasionally unnatural, for instance, 'good in english examination point of view' and 'playing practicle sports.' These lexical inaccuracies and persistent spelling mistakes prevent the vocabulary score from reaching higher bands, placing this performance at a 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some attempt at variety with relative clauses like 'which is located near our home town.' However, there are frequent grammatical errors in punctuation, tense consistency, and prepositions. Examples include 'I suggest you, to join' (incorrect comma and infinitive structure), 'girls should also learn about the cricket' (unnecessary article), and 'Recently, I also join that academy' (incorrect past tense). Although these errors do not completely impede communication, their frequency means they frequently distract the reader, making a band 5.0 the most appropriate reflection of your grammatical control.
