Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Ponty,

I hope you are doing well. I write you this letter to inform you that we had in the gym for last years together, so I am thinking that we have to start a new game like badminton as a profeesional game to be more involved in physical fitness. As you know we have a new upcoming games camp is launching in our college next month and badmition is a major considered sport and we can get free training from our teacher and make this game on hig platform and I would enjoy to get this opportunity with you and want to create a group so we can participate in the next championships and go on a big scale together and I would also recommend you to meet at the university campus next week so we can submit the registration fees and enjoy the learning together as a group.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the prompt. You recommend a new sport by suggesting badminton, explain how your friend could learn it through the college games camp and free teacher training, and propose learning it together by suggesting registration and championship participation. The tone is appropriate for an email to an English-speaking friend. However, the development of ideas is slightly constrained by the single-paragraph structure, meaning some points like the learning method run together without full elaboration. Despite this, all task requirements are clearly fulfilled.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.5

The entire response consists of a single, very long sentence without any paragraph breaks or appropriate punctuation. This creates a severe lack of logical division and places a heavy burden on the reader to follow the progression of ideas. While basic cohesive devices and conjunctions like 'so', 'and', and 'as you know' are used to link clauses, the absence of full stops, commas, and paragraphing means that cohesion is faulty and mechanical. To achieve a higher band, you must break your writing down into logical paragraphs and use standard sentence punctuation.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'physical fitness', 'registration fees', and 'championships'. However, there are notable spelling errors and awkward word choices, such as 'profeesional', 'badmition', 'hig platform', and 'we had in the gym for last years together'. Additionally, the phrase 'major considered sport' is unnatural. These lexical errors and spelling mistakes occasionally impede communication, placing your vocabulary in the lower-intermediate range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5

The grammatical structure of your response is heavily compromised by the fact that the entire 151-word text is written as one single run-on sentence. There is a complete lack of terminal punctuation. Within this massive sentence, you attempt some complex forms, such as 'so we can participate in the next championships and go on a big scale together and I would also recommend you to meet...', but these constructions are frequently faulty due to excessive coordination ('and' chaining). Grammatical errors and punctuation failures are pervasive throughout the text.
