Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sam,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this email to talk to you regarding your decision on learning football during your free time.
I am happy to hear that you have completed your mid term examinations successfully. During this vacation, i was hoping that we both go to the nearby football coaching center. Since, you are aware that we have an inter-college football tournament coming up next month, it would be amazing if we could participate in the tournament.
I believe that learning football would be simple compared to other sports since we have played together from early ages. And, I have observed that you have skills which could make you a good striker with decent practice and coaching.
We could register at the John Football coaching center at the Mount Road next week. This will help us get in shape and pick up some good football skills.
I will be grateful if you agree that we learn football together this holidays making us feel more connected as well as learn a new sport.
Yours sincerely,
John

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response effectively covers all bullet points outlined in the task instructions. You successfully recommended a new sport, namely football, and explained how your friend could learn it by registering at the John Football coaching center at Mount Road. Furthermore, you naturally incorporated the suggestion to learn the sport together during the upcoming holidays. The tone is appropriate for an informal email to a friend, and the purpose of the communication is clear throughout. Although the opening sentence contains a slight misunderstanding regarding learning a sport during free time as a new decision, the overall development of ideas is well-maintained and fully addresses all requirements of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The email demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the greeting, introduction, body points about coaching, and the closing statement. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, with transition phrases like 'Since, you are aware' and 'I believe that' guiding the reader through the text. Referencing is generally clear, though minor improvements in paragraph transitions could elevate the cohesion further. Overall, the arrangement is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate and generally appropriate for the task, with some attempts at less common lexical items such as 'inter-college football tournament', 'striker', and 'coaching center'. However, there are a few minor lexical and collocational inaccuracies, such as lowercase 'i' in 'i was hoping' and the phrasing 'learning football during your free time' instead of 'taking up football'. Despite these occasional slips, the range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message clearly without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating good control overall. Examples of complex structures include 'Since, you are aware that we have an inter-college football tournament coming up next month, it would be amazing if we could participate in the tournament.' There are some minor grammatical and punctuation errors, such as the unnecessary comma after 'Since', the lowercase 'i', and 'mid term' instead of 'mid-term'. However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication, with a good proportion of error-free sentences.
