Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Rui,

How're you doing? It's been a long time since we spoke. Responding back with a suggestion u asked related to a new sport to learn in a town.

So the sport is Badminton, why this, it is because this particular game requires a good physical health and height and you have both as you workout daily so you have good stamina to perform this sport. Also, the new gaming centre near your place provides this service so there's no need to travel as well you can go there by walk only.

I know you have never played this game before but don't worry about that because the facility itself provides free coach for a couple of class who speaks english and after that you can hire one by paying only $10 per session which last about an hour.

What I was thinking why not we join it together? As you know most of the evenings I'm free after work and I just scroll on my phone during that time. Instead I can take part in sport which will help me to stay fit and healthy. Also, we can split the coach fees in half.

Well do let me know what you think about this, and don't hesitate to reach out again if need any more advice.

Cheers,

Sukhman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the task prompt. You clearly recommended a new sport, badminton, explaining that it suits your friend due to their daily workouts and physical stamina. You explained how your friend could learn this sport by mentioning the nearby gaming centre, free coaching classes initially, and affordable subsequent sessions costing $10 per hour. Furthermore, you effectively suggested that you both learn the sport together, noting that it would help you stay fit and healthy during your free evenings. The tone is appropriately friendly and informal throughout. All parts of the task are well-developed and communicated with clarity, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The email has a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as the introduction of the sport, learning methods, and the proposal to join together. You use cohesive devices and linking words such as 'Also', 'I know you have', and 'Instead' to connect ideas, though some transitions like 'Responding back with a suggestion u asked' are slightly informal or abrupt. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall progression guides the reader smoothly from the greeting to the closing sign-off. This performance aligns well with the Band 7.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common lexical items such as 'stamina', 'facility', and 'split the coach fees'. However, there are instances of informal abbreviations like 'u' instead of 'you', and slight awkwardness in phrasing such as 'perform this sport' instead of 'play this sport' or 'take up this sport'. While the language is sufficient to convey your message clearly and communicate effectively, the presence of these minor slips and limited range of sophisticated vocabulary keeps this criterion at a solid Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I know you have never played this game before but don't worry about that because the facility itself provides free coach...' However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues, including sentence fragments ('How're you doing?' is okay, but 'Responding back with a suggestion u asked...' lacks a subject), subject-verb agreement errors ('provides free coach for a couple of class' instead of 'coaches' and 'classes'), and run-on sentences like '...travel as well you can go there...'. These errors do not impede communication, but their frequency prevents a higher score.
