Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Juned,
Hope you are doing well, I am writing this to give advice about learning a new sport in our town. I believe, learning swimming would be beneficial for you because of your interest in participating in upcoming Brantford town marathon.
To learn swimming you can join free classes in our community town center. They have several courses that can help you to learn brifly about swimming. Not only that, they do have a certified teachers with the years of experience in swimming which can be helpful for you to prepare for marathon.
However, I was also planning to learn swimming since a long time. If it is comfotable to you we both can join classes together. I will also get some company and we both can help and motivate each other with the preparation and learning.
Let me know what you think, hope to hear from you soon.
Kind regards,
Kim Jim

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You successfully covered all parts of the task requirements for this General Training email. You began by recommending swimming as a suitable sport for your friend Juned, linking it cleverly to his interest in the upcoming Brantford town marathon. You then explained how he could learn this sport by joining free classes at the community town center, highlighting the certified teachers and available courses. Finally, you successfully suggested that you both learn swimming together, pointing out the mutual benefits of company and motivation. Your tone is appropriately friendly and informal throughout. Although there are slight logical inconsistencies—such as learning swimming to prepare for a running marathon—the ideas are fully relevant and developed enough to meet the Band 7 criteria.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your email demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You structured the letter with appropriate paragraphs, each focusing on a distinct point: the recommendation, the details on how to learn, and the invitation to join together. Cohesive devices are used adequately to connect your ideas, such as 'To learn swimming', 'Not only that', and 'However'. However, referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as using 'which' to modify 'teachers' when referring to the facility's overall offerings, and some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately for an informal email format, and overall readability is maintained without difficulty for the reader.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrated an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and phrasal structures such as 'beneficial', 'participating in', 'certified teachers', and 'motivate each other'. However, there are notable word choice and spelling inaccuracies that prevent a higher band, such as 'brifly' instead of 'briefly' and 'comfotable' instead of 'comfortable'. Additionally, phrases like 'since a long time' are unnatural in English and should be expressed using 'for a long time' or 'for ages'. Despite these minor lexical flaws, communication is never impeded, and your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You successfully utilised a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conditional structures like 'If it is comfortable to you we both can join classes together' and relative clauses such as 'courses that can help you'. Control over grammar and punctuation shows reasonable competence, but a few errors persist. For instance, there is a comma splice in the opening sentence ('Hope you are doing well, I am writing...'), an article omission in 'learning swimming would be beneficial', and a plural-singular mismatch in 'a certified teachers'. While these errors occur regularly, they rarely impede communication, allowing the response to comfortably sit in the Band 6 range.
