Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Rolan,

I hope you are doing well. It was so great to hear from you that you need my advice to learn a new sport.

As games are crucial and beneficial for human health. It is better for you to learn outdoor game . I would suggest you to learn cricket. It is one of the well know sport in our area. It make you physically and mentally fit. Moreover, you will get the opportunity to make your career in th sports field via this game.

Interestingly, my other friends were also asking about it. We will play in a team and learn from eachother. Mainly, it require an open area covered with grass. We can play in a nearby ground of our town.It require regular practice and focus. I am sure that you will learn it quickly.

I had started learning cricket from last week. I have learned basic rules of the game. Its better if we learn it together so we can correct out mistakes.

Hope to catch you soon.

Best wishes,

Jasmeen

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response covers all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. Jasmeen successfully recommends a specific sport, cricket, explains how Rolan can learn it by mentioning regular practice, an open grass area, and starting to learn basic rules, and finally suggests that they both learn it together ('Its better if we learn it together so we can correct out mistakes'). The tone is appropriately friendly and informal for an email to a friend. The ideas are relevant and adequately developed for a General Training Task 1 response, meeting the requirements of the prompt well.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter exhibits a clear overall progression and logical organisation. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, recommendations, learning details, and the shared learning proposal. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Moreover', 'Interestingly', and 'Mainly', though some referencing and transitions feel slightly mechanical (e.g., 'As games are crucial...' followed by a sentence fragment 'It is better for you...'). Overall, the information flows reasonably well and is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Jasmeen demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common collocations and phrases such as 'physically and mentally fit' and 'career in the sports field'. However, there are notable word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'well know sport' (well-known), 'th sports' (the sports), 'eachother' (each other), and 'It require' (requires). These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to a Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Moreover, you will get the opportunity to make your career...' and 'I am sure that you will learn it quickly.' However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and sentence fragments, such as 'As games are crucial and beneficial for human health. It is better...' (fragment) and 'It require regular practice' (requires). Punctuation is also slightly flawed in places, such as missing apostrophes ('out mistakes' instead of 'our mistakes').
