IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Your English-speaking friend who lives in your town has asked for your advice about learning a new sport. Write an email to your friend. In your email:

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Ram,

I am writing to provide my suggestion about the question you asked me in your previous email. I think, you need to learn how to Cricket.

I firmly believe that Cricket would be the perfect sport for you to learn because of your height's advantage. Also, being left hander, you might have some benefits. In addition, your fitness will be the key point for your success in this sport.

For a basic trainning you can start with the footwork. For the batsman, footwork skill is the most important. Furthermore, I have sent some vidoes which may help you with fielding and rules.

Later, you can join an academy with me. I have been practicing under guidance of Mr. Kohli. He played for India at International level. He has sharp knowledge in this sport. Although our batch is full, I will make sure to add your name in the final list. Here, you would be able to learn from basic.

I look forward to hearing from you regarding my suggestion. I hope you enjoy playing Cricket. See you at the academy.

Yours sincerely,

Meet.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The candidate successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the task instructions. First, a suitable sport is recommended ("Cricket"). Second, the method of learning is explained through footwork drills, videos, and eventually joining an academy. Third, the suggestion is made to learn together ("Later, you can join an academy with me"). The tone is appropriate for an informal email to a friend. The ideas are relevant and adequately extended, such as referencing the friend's height advantage and the coach's background. Although there are some minor mechanical awkwardnesses in the delivery, all requirements of the general task 1 prompt are fully covered. Therefore, this performance meets the criteria for Band 6.5, rounded to 6.0 based on the minor limitations in task extension.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The email has a clear overall structure, starting with an appropriate greeting and ending with a standard closing. Paragraphing is used logically to separate different aspects of the advice: the recommendation, learning methods, academy details, and final sign-off. Cohesive devices such as "Also", "In addition", "Furthermore", and "Later" are used to connect ideas, though some transitional phrasing feels slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional abrupt transitions between sentences slightly disrupt the natural flow. Nevertheless, the progression of ideas is easy to follow from the initial recommendation to the final invitation to join the academy, fitting the requirements for Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including topic-specific terms such as "footwork", "batsman", "fielding", and "academy". There are some lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as "how to Cricket" instead of "how to play cricket", "trainning" with a spelling error, and "sharp knowledge" instead of "extensive knowledge". Less common items are attempted with mixed success. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message clearly, these inaccuracies and limited flexibility prevent the response from achieving a higher band. The lexical resource is characteristic of a solid Band 6 performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and transitional clauses ("Although our batch is full, I will make sure..."). There are several noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, including "I think, you need to learn how to Cricket" (unnecessary comma and missing verb), "height's advantage" (awkward possessive), and "learn from basic" (missing noun plural or article). Punctuation is generally functional, but overall grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. The errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to place the response firmly in the Band 6 category.
