Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Jhon,

I am writing this letter to sugges tswimming which you can try on weekends. I believe that with your busy schedule you can learn this new activity easily. Swimming is fun to learn and is good for mental and physical health.

I know some good places which are near to your work place. And, in the evening time they conduct some special batches for working professional. Mr SAM is the head coach there and I know them personally. So, I will introduce you to Mr Sam he will teach you personally. They have some advance equipments which you can use to learn swimming very fast.

Moreover, I think this time also suitable for me as well. So I will join you at the same time. I have already bought goggles, caps, and swimming shorts for both of us. I am looking forward to see you soon.

Warn regards,

Shailendra singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points required in the prompt. You clearly recommended swimming as a suitable sport in the opening sentence ('sugges tswimming which you can try on weekends'). You explained how your friend could learn by mentioning that Mr. Sam, the head coach, conducts special batches for working professionals and will provide personal instruction utilizing advanced equipment. Additionally, you successfully suggested learning together ('So I will join you at the same time' and that you have bought equipment for both of us). The tone is friendly and appropriate for an email to an acquaintance. Ideas are relevant and fully developed to meet the requirements of General Training Task 1. Therefore, this performance easily satisfies the criteria for Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical organization. You have divided the response into appropriate paragraphs, with an opening greeting, a body discussing the sport and lessons, and a final paragraph covering your plan to join together and the sign-off. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'Moreover' to introduce an additional point. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally slightly mechanical or feature punctuation errors, such as in the sentence 'And, in the evening time...'. Paragraphing is utilized effectively to separate distinct ideas, ensuring the reader can easily follow the narrative from the recommendation to the joint plan. Overall, the organizational structure is sound and merits a Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'working professional', 'head coach', and 'personally'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'sugges tswimming' (run-on/typo), 'evening time' (awkward phrasing, better as 'evenings'), 'advance equipments' (incorrect pluralization of equipment and use of 'advance' instead of 'advanced'), and 'Warn regards' (incorrect sign-off, should be 'Warm regards'). Despite these inaccuracies, communication is never impeded, and the vocabulary remains minimally sufficient to convey all intended meanings clearly, fitting the Band 6.0 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I believe that with your busy schedule you can learn this new activity easily.' There are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips present, including missing spaces, a missing subject pronoun in the final sentence ('looking forward to see you' instead of 'seeing'), capitalization issues in 'Mr SAM', and spelling errors. While these errors occur with some frequency, they rarely impede overall communication or cause severe difficulty for the reader. The control over simple structures is generally secure, supporting a solid Band 6.0 performance.
