Dear John,

I am glad hearing from you. It is super exciting that you are willing to learn a new sport. My personal suggestion would be to go for Football, as you follow many renowned players of football. In addition to that, as you are a basketball player, this will be an engaging sports for you to keep you fit. Moreover, the best football clubs surrounds our area, such as Messi Club. You can join it and along with that few common friends are into football. They can let you know about tricks of the game. It will help us learn and understand the game better and we can practice simultaneously at our spare time.

Looking forward to hearing from you and hopefully joining the group together.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The candidate successfully covers all parts of the prompt in a friendly and appropriate tone for a general correspondence task. First, a clear recommendation is given to learn football ('My personal suggestion would be to go for Football'). Second, the response explains how the friend could learn this sport, suggesting joining a local club like 'Messi Club' and leaning on mutual friends who know the 'tricks of the game'. Third, the writer suggests that they both learn the sport together ('Therefore, we can perhaps join the club together'). All bullet points are well addressed and the register is consistently informal and fitting for a friend.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a clear logical progression throughout, beginning with a greeting, moving through the advice, explanations, and joint proposal, and ending with an appropriate sign-off. The candidate uses various cohesive devices to connect ideas, such as 'In addition to that', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore'. However, paragraphing is somewhat restricted, as the main body of the letter is compressed into a single block of text rather than being broken down into logical paragraphs, which prevents the score from reaching a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The candidate demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully incorporating less common expressions such as 'renowned players', 'engaging sports', and 'enthralling part'. There are a few noticeable lexical inaccuracies, such as the collocation error 'surrounds our area' (should be 'surround our area') and the slight misuse of 'entralling' where 'exciting' or 'best' might be more natural. Nonetheless, these vocabulary choices do not impede communication, and meaning is conveyed clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and relative clauses ('as you follow many renowned players', 'It will help us learn and understand the game better'). There are several grammatical errors present, notably 'I am glad hearing from you' (should be 'to hear'), 'sports' used as a singular plural mismatch ('this will be an engaging sports'), and 'at our spare time' (should be 'in our spare time'). Despite these errors, the sentence structures are generally controlled, and they rarely impede overall comprehension.
