Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Juned,
Hope you are doing well, I am writing this to give advice about learning a new sport in the town. I believe, learning swimming would be beneficial because of your interest in participating in upcoming the Brantford town marathon.
To learn swimming, you can join free classes in our community town center. They offer several courses that can help you to learn briefly about swimming. Not only that, they have a premium courses that has certified teachers with the years of experience in swimming which can be help you to prepare for the marathon.
However, I was also planning to learn swimming from ages. If it is comfortable to you we can join classes together. I will also have a company and we both can help and motivate each other for the preparation and learning.
Let me know what you think, hope to hear from you soon.
Kind regards,
Kim Ji

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the bullet points, addressing the task well. You have recommended a suitable sport by suggesting swimming, explained how your friend can learn it through community centre classes, and successfully suggested that you both learn together. The tone is appropriate for an informal email to a friend. Your ideas are clear throughout, although the connection between swimming and a marathon could be slightly more fully extended to reach the highest standards. However, all three bullet points required in the instructions are clearly identified and answered, fully satisfying the requirements for this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your email presents a clear overall progression and coherent arrangement of ideas. You have used paragraphing appropriately to separate different topics, such as the recommendation, the learning options, and the joint proposal. Cohesive devices are generally well handled, with phrases like 'To learn swimming' and 'However' guiding the reader smoothly through the text. To move towards a higher level of cohesion, some of the referencing and linking could be made slightly more seamless, as a few transitions feel a bit mechanical. Nonetheless, the letter is easy to follow and logically structured from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'premium courses' and 'certified teachers'. There are, however, some word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as writing 'upcoming the Brantford town marathon' instead of 'the upcoming Brantford town marathon', and stating 'from ages' instead of 'for ages'. Additionally, 'a premium courses' contains a singular/plural mismatch. These minor errors do not impede communication, but eliminating them and using a slightly wider variety of precise phrasing would lift your lexical score further.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
Your writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I believe, learning swimming would be beneficial because of your interest...' You demonstrate control over basic sentence structures, but there are several errors in grammar and punctuation. For instance, the unnecessary comma after 'well' in the opening sentence, the missing article in 'have a premium courses', and the phrasing 'which can be help you' show persistent slips. While these errors rarely impede communication, they occur regularly throughout the text, meaning your control is best reflected at this level.
