Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Amna,

I hope you are well. I'm writing to let you know that I was very happy to hear that you have finally decided to learn a new sport, and have asked for my advice on it.

I want to suggest that you should try to learn badminton. Its a wonderful game and trust me you'll never regret playing it. Since you already know how to play squash, this would'nt be much difficult for you. Moreover, this game does'nt have much rules to remember.

There is a sports club near your house, which has a huge badminton court. The club has hired professional players who offer teaching classes on Sundays. It would be feasible for you, as you can easily spare you weekends for this. Coaching classes are also not very expensive, it is just $5 per Sunday. Moreover, learning from a professional trainer is a very good oportunity that should'nt be missed.

I'am also planning to enrol in these classes. It would be so much fun if you and I learn badminton together. In this way we will be able to spend some quality time together. After learning, we can play it on weekends in my garden.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Your friend,

Sara

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You successfully cover all parts of the task in a natural, friendly tone appropriate for a general correspondence. You clearly recommend badminton as a suitable sport, explain how your friend can learn it through the professional classes at the local sports club, and suggest learning it together so you can spend quality time. Your ideas are well-extended and supported with specific details, such as the cost of the classes and the location of the court. To move even further into higher bands, your explanation of how to learn could incorporate slightly more varied alternatives for practicing outside of structured lessons, showing a fully exhaustive exploration of the prompt's requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your email demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You make effective use of paragraphs to separate different aspects of your message, such as the recommendation in the second paragraph, the logistical details in the third, and the joint proposal in the fourth. You use cohesive devices flexibly, including phrases like 'Moreover', 'Since you already know', and 'In this way'. While referencing is generally clear, occasional cohesive links feel slightly standard rather than entirely seamless, which is characteristic of this level. To reach the next band, you could experiment with a wider variety of subtler transition markers that make the flow of ideas even more integrated.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating less common phrases such as 'professional players', 'feasible', and 'enrol in these classes'. However, there are a few spelling and word choice errors, including 'oportunity' instead of opportunity, missing apostrophes in contractions like 'Its' and 'does'nt', and the phrasing 'much rules' instead of 'many rules'. These lexical slips do not impede communication, but they prevent a higher score. To improve your lexical score, ensure greater accuracy in spelling and basic word forms, while attempting to integrate more precise collocations when describing sports and hobbies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms quite effectively, incorporating conditional and causal clauses such as 'Since you already know how to play squash, this would'nt be much difficult for you' and 'It would be so much fun if you and I learn badminton together.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly missing apostrophes in negative contractions ('would'nt', 'does'nt', 'should'nt') and an incorrect subject-verb agreement or auxiliary form in 'I'am'. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication. To reach the highest level of grammatical accuracy, you should pay closer attention to punctuation rules regarding contractions and ensure consistent control over auxiliary verb forms.
