Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear sam,
Hope you are doing well. It was great to hear that you're intrested in learning a new sport. Acccording to me, i think badminton would be a great choice because it is easy to learn, it's enjoyable and a good way to stay fit.
There are several ways you can learn badminton. I suggest joining a beginner's classes where you will be aware about the basic rules and the techniques. You could also watch some videos such as online tutorialand practice regularly that will improve your skills.
Actually, I've been thinking about learning badminton so why don't we take the classes together and start practice the skills we learn in the evening on the weekend or the weekdays?.It would be much more enjoyable together, and we could motivate each other.
Let me know what you think. Hopefully, we can start soon!
Best wishes,
Anuj

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all three parts of the prompt by recommending badminton, explaining how your friend could learn through classes and tutorials, and suggesting learning together. There is a clear, friendly tone throughout the letter. The ideas are extended and supported well, such as explaining the benefits of playing together like motivation and enjoyment. However, it must be noted that the response falls slightly short of the required minimum length, containing 146 words instead of the minimum 150 words. To reach a higher band, the response would need to meet the word count requirement and fully develop all aspects without any minor omissions or brevity in the paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: an introduction and recommendation in the first paragraph, learning methods in the second paragraph, and a proposal to learn together in the third paragraph. Cohesive devices are used appropriately, such as 'There are several ways', 'You could also', and 'Actually, I've been thinking', which link the ideas smoothly. Referencing is generally clear, and paragraphing is used sufficiently. To move to a higher band, the cohesion could be made even more seamless and unobtrusive, avoiding any slight mechanical feel in the transitions between sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating ideas about sports and learning. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'beginner's classes', 'online tutorial', and 'motivate each other'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'intrested' instead of 'interested', 'Acccording to me, i think' which is unnatural phrasing, and 'online tutorialand' which contains a spacing error. To achieve a higher band, the vocabulary needs to show greater precision and be entirely free of basic spelling and collocation mistakes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over structures such as 'because it is easy to learn' and 'so why don't we take the classes together'. There are some grammatical errors and awkward punctuation present, such as 'joining a beginner's classes' (article and plural mismatch), 'practice the skills we learn in the evening on the weekend or the weekdays?.' (run-on sentence with incorrect punctuation), and missing capitalization for names like 'sam'. These errors do not impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the message easily. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to produce a greater frequency of error-free sentences and demonstrate tighter control over punctuation and article usage.
