Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Ahil,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this in response to your letter in which you asked my suggestion regarding learning a new sport.

I know you're are sports lover and always love to play a Football and Hockey. At this time you should focus on a sport that not only beneficial for physical activity but also proves a life-saving skill. Which is swimming. It is an interesting sport, which involves so much fun and helps to maintain the body fitness

Swimming is not very hard to learn and one of my friends was sharing his experience of swimming classes lessons, At the same time he mentioned the swimming academy, name Adventurous swimming. It is in city centre and the price of lessons is $20 per class.

During this summer vacation we should register for this swimming classes, which is a short period course. We would choose evenning time between 4pm to 5pm. I am very excited fto learn this sport and it would be great fun to learn swimming together.

I am looking forward to hearing from you. You take care yourself.

Yours faithfully,

Tara

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, achieving a solid standard for this criterion. You clearly recommend swimming as a suitable sport for your friend, explain how they can learn it by providing specific details about an academy called 'Adventurous swimming' and its pricing, and suggest learning it together by proposing that you register for evening classes this summer. Your position and purpose are clear throughout the email, and the ideas are extended and supported effectively. To move towards higher bands, some of the supporting details could be slightly more fully developed with additional context, but all requirements of the task have been clearly and appropriately met.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter demonstrates a clear overall arrangement and logical progression, successfully balancing the different parts of the task across distinct paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the recommendation and benefits, the learning details, and the joint proposal. Cohesive devices are generally well handled, with phrases like 'In response to your letter', 'At this time', and 'During this summer vacation' guiding the reader through the text. However, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel slightly mechanical or abrupt, such as the sentence fragment 'Which is swimming.' To achieve a higher standard, you could employ a wider variety of more sophisticated and seamless cohesive links to connect your ideas more fluidly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully communicating your message while attempting some less common items such as 'life-saving skill', 'body fitness', and 'academy'. However, there are notable word choice, word form, and spelling errors throughout the text that reflect an adequate rather than advanced lexical range. For example, expressions like 'play a Football and Hockey' contain unnecessary articles and pluralisation issues, 'evenning' contains a spelling error, and 'fto learn' is a typo. Additionally, phrases like 'prove a life-saving skill' show minor collocation inaccuracies. To improve your lexical score, aim to use a wider range of precise vocabulary with correct word forms, spelling, and natural collocations while avoiding repetition and basic slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating your ability to construct compound and subordinate clauses, such as in 'I am writing this in response to your letter in which you asked my suggestion'. However, there are several persistent errors in grammar and punctuation that prevent a higher score. You made errors in verb forms and agreement, such as 'you're are sports lover', missing prepositions in 'focus on a sport that not only beneficial', and awkward phrasing like 'one of my friends was sharing his experience of swimming classes lessons'. Punctuation and article usage also need closer attention. To reach the next level, you need to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and maintain stricter control over basic grammatical agreements and article rules.
