Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Manpreet,

I am writing this letter to recommend you about a new sport. I recommend you cricket sport because i know you are big of cricket from childhood. You have so much interest in this sport, that is the reason this would be suitable for you perfectly.

You can learn this sport from cricket academy and the best thing is that acedemy is available in our town. You can start learning from the next week. The coach there is very experienced his name is Ross Taylor the retired new zealand player. His international cricket carrer is outstanding.

I am thinking that we both can learn the cricket sport together. i am also big fan of cricket and during school days i played cricket regulary for my school team. Also if we both go for admission they will provide discount offers for us, That will be a best for both of us. So lets go from next monday see you there.

Yours Faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task requirements in a natural, friendly tone appropriate for an email to an acquaintance. You clearly recommend learning cricket, explain how your friend can learn it through the local academy with the experienced coach Ross Taylor, and suggest that you both learn the sport together while taking advantage of a group discount. The position is clear throughout, and the ideas are appropriately extended and supported with relevant details, such as the mention of the coach and the discount. There are minor tendencies to over-generalise or lean on slightly repetitive phrasing, which places this response comfortably at the targeted level for task achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The email demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression from the greeting through the recommendation, the details of the academy, the suggestion to join together, and the sign-off. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to group related ideas, such as placing the academy details in the second paragraph and the joint plan in the third. Cohesive devices are generally used effectively, such as 'that is the reason' and 'also if we both go', though referencing and transitions can occasionally feel a bit mechanical. This reflects a solid grasp of basic textual flow while pointing the way toward more flexible cohesive control found at higher bands.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to successfully convey your message about cricket and the local academy. You attempt some less common vocabulary items such as 'outstanding', 'experienced', and 'discount offers', but there are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling. For instance, writing 'big of cricket' instead of 'a big fan of cricket', misspelling 'acedemy' as 'academy', and awkward phrasing like 'cricket sport' indicate an emerging lexical range. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they highlight the need for greater precision, control of collocations, and care with spelling to reach higher levels.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'You have so much interest in this sport, that is the reason this would be suitable for you perfectly.' However, there are some grammar and punctuation errors present throughout the text. Examples include missing articles ('recommend you about a new sport' instead of 'recommend a new sport', 'retired new zealand player' with missing capitalisation), punctuation issues like comma splices ('offers for us, That will be'), and lowercase 'i' pronouns. These errors occur frequently enough to prevent a higher rating, but they rarely impede overall communication, fitting well within the expectations for this level.
