IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Your English-speaking friend who lives in your town has asked for your advice about learning a new sport. Write an email to your friend. In your email:

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear John,

It's been a long time since we last met. Glad that atleast you reached out to me for a new sport recommendation.

Although in mumbai it is challenging to find a cricket ground, still I highly encourage you to get involve in cricket, because even gully cricket can reduce stress and help to redice the cortisol level from this high paced mumbai life style.

You do not have to worry about the equipments like bat, ball, pads and helmet because I will take care of it. I will be adding you in our cricket group where you just need to show up when the matches are happening and just follow what other people are doing.

I would have helped you to learn this sport asap, but right now I am on a work trip. Once I am in town will play together and I will teach you to hit sixes.

can't wait to catch up with you.

Regards,

Jay

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You successfully address all parts of the prompt, satisfying the lower band requirements fully and touching upon higher-level development. You recommend cricket as a suitable sport, explain how your friend can learn by joining a group and following others, and suggest learning together once you return from your trip. While all bullet points are covered, some ideas are slightly under-developed; for instance, the explanation of how to learn relies heavily on just showing up rather than offering deeper details about practice sessions or training. To move to a higher band, you could expand more fully on the specific training steps or the nature of the coaching you plan to provide when you return.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your email displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear friendly tone and logical progression from greeting to recommendation, learning methods, joint plans, and sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. However, cohesion is sometimes a bit mechanical or relies on simple transitions, such as starting sentences with 'Although' or 'You do not have to worry' without fully smooth referencing between sentences. To reach a higher level, you could employ a wider variety of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that pronoun referencing and logical links between paragraphs are completely seamless.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully attempting less common items and informal phrases suited to an email to a friend, such as 'high paced mumbai life style' and 'catch up with you'. However, there are some word-choice and spelling errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'atleast' (at least), 'get involve' (get involved), 'equipments' (equipment is uncountable), and the typo 'redice' (reduce). These do not impede communication, but to achieve a higher band, you need greater control over word forms, spellings, and more precise lexical collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over future structures and conditional clauses, such as 'Once I am in town will play together'. There are some grammatical errors, such as missing subject pronouns ('still I highly encourage', 'Once I am in town will play', 'can't wait'), punctuation issues with lowercase sentence beginnings like 'can't wait', and preposition choices. These errors rarely impede communication, reflecting the expected control for this level. To move up, you should aim for a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and more consistent punctuation and subject-verb agreement.
