Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all requirements of the prompt by recommending badminton, explaining how Mark can learn it through the provided contact details, and suggesting that you both learn it together. The tone is appropriately informal and friendly. However, the development of ideas is slightly uneven. While the recommendation and joint learning plan are clear, the explanation of how to learn the sport relies heavily on repeating that contact details were sent rather than elaborating further. This puts the response securely in the range where all parts are addressed, but some points lack full extension. To reach a higher level, the ideas could be expanded with more detailed descriptions of the training sessions or how the lessons are structured, rather than brief mentions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The email maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning, middle, and end, following standard informal email conventions. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct ideas, such as the initial recommendation, the logistical details of learning, and the plan to start together. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or repetitive, particularly with transitions like 'Then' and 'Also', which make the flow between sentences somewhat predictable. Referencing is generally clear, but occasional abrupt shifts between sentences prevent the progression from feeling completely smooth. To improve cohesion further, the writer could use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that relationships between ideas are signalled more naturally without relying on basic conjunctions and sequencing words.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the main points, but it shows limited range and flexibility. The writer attempts some less common expressions, such as 'fit as a fiddle' and 'not a rocket science', though the latter contains a minor article error. There is also noticeable repetition of words and phrases, such as 'badminton sport' and 'learn this sport', which restricts lexical variety. Word choice is generally clear enough to prevent any serious misunderstanding, but inaccuracies in collocation and word forms are present. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate a more precise and varied selection of vocabulary, avoiding redundant repetitions and employing natural collocations suitable for informal correspondence.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional clauses and relative constructions. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent, with frequent errors that occasionally require the reader to work harder to understand the intended meaning. Examples of errors include intrusive prepositions and word order issues, such as 'writing this email you because you were asking to me about', as well as article and phrasing errors like 'is not a rocket science'. Punctuation at the end of the text also shows minor lapses, such as lowercase beginnings in the final sign-off. To improve, the writer needs to exercise greater control over basic grammatical patterns, verb complements, and prepositions, ensuring that complex structures are formed accurately.
