Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sai,

I hope you are doing welI. I am writing to recommend a sport, which is a well known sport in my town. The name of the sport is cricket, It's a outdoor game which helps to saty fit.

Firstly, the main reason to recommend is It's a national game in my country, so the instruments used to play the sport is easily available in every Sports store. Moreover, many people live here familiar with the rules of the game, so you can easily practice with any of them. In addition to that, if you want to get trained from a coach, many trainers are easily available in our town, Linkedin is the right place to find them.

I am planning to join gym from next month but I feel playing cricket will be more beneficial and we can spend sometime together. Let me know at what time you are planning to learn, If time permits I will join with you.

Looking forward to hear from you soon.

Love,

Pranusha

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by recommending a specific sport, explaining how to learn it, and suggesting learning it together. The tone is appropriate for an informal email to a friend. However, some ideas show a typical characteristic of this band level by being slightly under-developed. For instance, the explanation of how to learn cricket mentions that equipment is available and coaches can be found on LinkedIn, but it does not elaborate much further on how a beginner actually starts playing. To reach the next higher band, all parts of the prompt would need to be extended with more fully realised supporting details and richer elaboration.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the greeting and recommendation to the learning methods, personal plans, and sign-off. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'In addition to that', though some of these transitional phrases feel slightly mechanical rather than entirely natural. Referencing is generally clear throughout the text. To move beyond this level, the use of cohesive devices would need to become more flexible and unobtrusive, avoiding formulaic transitions and ensuring a smoother logical progression between sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the intended message about learning a sport. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary items, such as 'beneficial' and 'permits', but these are accompanied by some lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors, such as writing 'welI' instead of 'well', 'saty fit' instead of 'stay fit', and referring to an 'outdoor game' as an 'It's a outdoor game' with a comma splice. To achieve a higher band, the vocabulary range would need to be wider and more precise, with fewer errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling that occasionally distract from the reading experience.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structure. You attempt complex sentences with conditional clauses, such as 'if you want to get trained from a coach...' and 'If time permits I will join with you.' However, there are noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation, including comma splices ('The name of the sport is cricket, It\'s a outdoor game') and missing articles ('join gym' instead of 'join a gym'). These errors rarely impede communication, placing the writing firmly in this band. To reach the next level, a greater variety of error-free complex structures and tighter control over punctuation would be required.
