IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Your English-speaking friend who lives in your town has asked for your advice about learning a new sport. Write an email to your friend. In your email:
- recommend a new sport that would be suitable for your friend to learn
- explain how your friend could learn this sport
- suggest that you both learn this sport together
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Friend,
It's been a long time since we last spoke. I am writing to inform you that you should learn cricket in our town.
I wanted to let you know that cricket is very popular among the modern generation. Because you have good fitness and height, it is suitable for you. To learn this sport, you have to enroll in KC Academy, which charges $ 200 per month. They will provide all necessary safety kits. Make sure to do exercise before going to practice. In addition, if you need any further information regarding the academy, feel free to contact the customer service number.
Furthermore, I also practice at home. I would love it if you could join me, and we can learn together. We are doing batting and bowling, turn by turn.
Hope to see you soon. Take care and stay in touch. It will be great
Best wishes,
Almas

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requirements: you recommend cricket, explain that your friend could enrol at KC Academy, and invite them to practise with you. The advice is relevant and includes useful details such as the monthly fee and equipment. The recommendation is supported by your friend’s fitness and height, although the connection between these qualities and cricket could be explained more clearly. The learning advice is also somewhat brief: you mention the academy and warming up, but could add what a beginner’s lessons involve or how to sign up. Your invitation is clear, but “We are doing batting and bowling, turn by turn” does not fully explain how learning together would work. More development of these points would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The email has a clear overall sequence: greeting and purpose, reasons for choosing cricket, practical learning information, and an invitation to practise together. Paragraphing helps separate these points, and linking expressions such as “In addition” and “Furthermore” guide the reader. Some connections feel mechanical or unclear, however. “Furthermore, I also practice at home” repeats the additive meaning, and the shift from academy advice to practising at home could be linked more naturally. The final sentence, “It will be great,” is left incomplete, which weakens the closing progression. Use a more direct transition between the academy and your shared practice, and finish the thought before signing off.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the purpose, including sport-specific terms such as “batting” and “bowling,” as well as practical language like “enroll” and “safety kits.” The meaning is generally clear, but some choices are awkward or imprecise for a friendly email. “Inform you that you should learn” sounds formal and forceful rather than like friendly advice, while “modern generation” is not a natural way to describe cricket’s popularity. “Customer service number” is also an unusual phrase for contacting a sports academy. Aim for more natural collocations and a consistent conversational tone. The vocabulary suggestions below offer alternatives that preserve your meaning while sounding more fluent and appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple sentences and more developed forms, including the reason clause “Because you have good fitness and height” and the conditional phrase “if you need any further information.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical choices and punctuation need attention. “Because you have good fitness and height, it is suitable for you” leaves the reference of “it” somewhat unclear; name cricket directly. “We are doing batting and bowling, turn by turn” uses a present continuous form that does not fit the intended suggestion about future practice. The closing “It will be great” is also incomplete as written. Review tense choice, sentence completion, and punctuation to make the message more controlled.
