Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Misha,

I hope you are doing well. It is been long time that I heard about you from any of our friends. I am writing to give you advice about learning a new sport. I was really happy to hear that you want to learn something different apart from your studies.

I think you should try table tennis. It is easy to learn, you do not need much equipment and space to play, and I think it is a great way to fit and reduce the risk of any injuries. It is enjoyable and motivational sport. People of all ages like to play and learn this sport.

There are several ways you could learn. Firstly, by watching tutorial videos on the Youtube and the internet, you can learn about trics and strategies of this sport. Secondly, The best option is to join a beginners' class at the sport centre in our town, where a coach will teach you basic skills, such as holding the racket and serving.

I would also like to recommend you that we should learn table tennis together. It would be more fun and enjoyable experience for both of us. We could motivate and teach each other about different techniques and methods.

Let me know if you are interested in my suggestion. So, I will look after tthe places.

Eagerly waiting for your response.

Yours sincerely,

Hani Kathiriya.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three parts of the task: you recommend table tennis, explain that your friend could use online tutorials or join a beginners’ class, and invite them to learn with you. The advice is relevant and your friendly purpose is clear throughout. You also support the recommendation with practical points about equipment, space and the coach teaching basic skills. To make the ideas more fully developed, explain why table tennis suits Misha in particular, or add a specific detail such as where or when you could practise together. The closing promise to “look after the places” is unclear, so state more precisely what you will arrange.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The email has a clear progression: an opening, a recommendation, learning options, an invitation to join you, and a closing. Paragraphs each focus on a distinct purpose, and signposts such as “Firstly” and “Secondly” help the reader follow the advice. The invitation also follows naturally from the explanation of how Misha could learn. Some linking is a little mechanical, particularly the repeated sequencing of “Firstly” and “Secondly,” and the final sentences do not connect smoothly: “So, I will look after tthe places” is difficult to interpret. Use a more natural transition and make the final action explicit, for example, that you will check class times or book a place.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a friendly advice email, including relevant terms such as “tutorial videos,” “strategies,” “beginners’ class,” “basic skills,” and “techniques.” These choices make the sport and learning process clear. There are, however, some inaccurate word choices, collocations and spelling slips that limit precision: “a great way to fit” does not express the intended benefit, “motivational sport” is unnatural here, and “trics” is misspelled. “Look after the places” is also unclear in this context. Aim for natural combinations such as “a good way to stay fit” and “an enjoyable sport,” and proofread spelling and phrasing carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the relative clause “where a coach will teach you basic skills” and the modal construction “you could learn.” Most of the message remains easy to understand, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “It is been long time” needs a correct verb form and article, while “I would also like to recommend you that” has an incorrect pattern after “recommend.” The sentence beginning “Firstly, by watching…” is also awkwardly structured, and “It would be more fun and enjoyable experience” is missing an article. Practise these patterns and check articles, verb forms and sentence construction to improve accuracy.
