Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Taran,

How are you? I have received your letter asking for advice on learning a new sport. Guess what? I have found one that could be beneficial and easy for you to learn.

I know how much you love spending time doing something productive. After searching for a while, I found that football would interest you. This not only helps you relax but also beneficial for building body strength.

I know one recreational facility, within walking distance from your house, where you can enrol to learn this sport. They provide a short term course of about 4 weeks, where you can learn the basics. Another good part is that it is budget friendly. You will get a personal instructor who will train you.

You will be happy to know that I was also looking to join these classes, so we can start learning this sport together. It would be great fun, we will also get some time to spend.

I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Love,

Palak

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The email addresses all three requirements clearly: you recommend football, explain that your friend can enrol at a nearby facility for a four-week course with an instructor, and invite them to join you. The advice is relevant and the friendly tone suits the relationship. You also give useful supporting details, such as the facility being within walking distance and the course being affordable. To make the ideas more fully developed, explain briefly why football is especially suitable for Taran—for example, whether it matches their interests or fitness level—and add a practical detail about how to enrol or when classes take place. This would make the recommendation more personalised and complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The message is organised in a clear sequence: you introduce the request, recommend a sport, describe how to learn it, and then suggest joining together. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow each part, while phrases such as “After searching for a while” and “Another good part” guide the progression. The opening and closing also make the email feel appropriately personal. To make the links between ideas more natural and flexible, avoid relying on simple transitions such as “Another good part” and “You will be happy to know.” You could connect the course details more smoothly to your invitation, so the final suggestion feels like a natural next step rather than a separate point.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for giving friendly advice, and expressions such as “recreational facility,” “personal instructor,” and “budget friendly” help communicate practical information. The tone is generally appropriate for an email to a friend. However, some word choices and collocations are imprecise or repetitive: “beneficial and easy for you to learn” is broad, and “beneficial for building body strength” sounds unnatural. “Something productive” is also vague in this context. Aim for more precise sport-related language and natural combinations of words; this would give you greater flexibility and improve the clarity of your recommendation. The meaning remains clear despite these occasional inaccuracies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “where you can enrol to learn this sport” and the clause beginning “where you can learn the basics.” Most sentences are easy to understand, and the email’s meaning is not impeded. Some grammatical errors remain. In “This not only helps you relax but also beneficial for building body strength,” the second part needs a verb, such as “is beneficial.” The sentence “It would be great fun, we will also get some time to spend” joins two independent clauses with only a comma; use a full stop or a conjunction. More consistent control of these structures would strengthen accuracy.
