IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Your English-speaking friend who lives in your town has asked for your advice about learning a new sport. Write an email to your friend. In your email:

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mohit,

I am writing to suggest you a new sport that you asked me before. I was thinking to join volley ball classes from next month and this sport works good for you as well.

I am willing that we both can take volley ball coaching from Mr. Singh. He is the international champion player of volley ball team and lives close to our house. It is a 3 months training starting from November 15.

Also, I have seen you as the best player of this game when we played in the school ground. I know you have not played this sport around 3 years, but believe me, you can do best with your hard work on the ground. Also, I have given my name for the upcoming event of volley ball. If you are interested, I recommend you to enroll online and show your talent.

Thanks.

With love,

Aman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you recommend volleyball, explain that you could take coaching from Mr Singh, and invite Mohit to join you. The details about the three-month course, its start date, and your friend’s previous experience make the advice relevant and personal. This meets the task well, with some elements more fully developed than others: the recommendation and shared-learning idea are clear, but the practical explanation of how to enrol or what the lessons involve is less complete. The reference to an upcoming event adds encouragement, though its connection to learning the sport could be explained more clearly. To strengthen the response further, give a little more detail about the classes and make the invitation to learn together explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The email has a clear overall sequence: you introduce the suggestion, describe the coaching, encourage Mohit, and close appropriately. Paragraph breaks help separate the main ideas, and linking expressions such as “Also” and “If you are interested” guide the reader through the message. However, “Also” is repeated, and the relationship between the coaching, your friend’s past ability, and the upcoming event is not always smooth. The final paragraph combines encouragement with event information, so the focus shifts somewhat. For clearer progression, organise the email around the three task points and use more varied links, such as “Since you played well at school” or “As a next step.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main advice, with relevant terms such as “coaching,” “training,” “international champion,” and “upcoming event.” The personal references also help the email sound friendly. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, including “suggest you a new sport,” “works good for you,” and repeated use of “volley ball.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce naturalness and precision. Aim to learn common combinations and use the standard spelling “volleyball.” You could also vary repeated words such as “sport” and “game” with more precise terms like “activity,” “lessons,” or “matches,” where appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple sentences and longer structures, including “I know you have not played this sport around 3 years, but believe me…” and the conditional “If you are interested…”. The message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in sentence patterns, verb forms, and prepositions. For example, “I am willing that we both can take” is not a well-formed construction, and “you have not played this sport around 3 years” needs a different time expression and preposition. The opening sentence also needs a more accurate verb pattern after “suggest.” Practise these structures and check articles, prepositions, and sentence punctuation; greater control would make the email smoother.
