Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Hi Simoni,
i hope you are doing well. i just received your letter and you mentioned that you would like to learn a new sport, and I have been thinking about what might suits you. Considering your energy and love for outdoor activities, I would really recommend tennis. It is great full-body workout, easy to pick up as a beginner, and perfect for improving co-ordination and stamina.
There are a few good ways you could start learning it. The community sports centre in town offers beginner tennis lessons twice a week, and the coaches there are very friendly and patient. You could also watch online tutorials to learn basic techniques like serving and forehand swings. Once you get comfortable with the basics, practicing regularly on the local courts will help you improve quickly.
Actually, I have been wanting to learn tennis myself, so it might be fun, if we start together. We could join the same beginner class and practice on weekends. I think learning with a friend would make the whole experience more enjoyable and motivating.
Let me know what you think. I would be excited to give it a try with you.
take care
Krishna

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
You address all three requirements clearly: tennis is recommended, practical ways to learn it are explained, and you invite your friend to join you. The advice is relevant and supported with useful details, such as beginner lessons at the community sports centre, friendly coaches, online tutorials, and weekend practice. Your reasons for choosing tennis—your friend’s energy and interest in outdoor activities, as well as the benefits for coordination and stamina—make the recommendation personal. The invitation is also explicit and encouraging. To make the response even more fully developed, you could add a little practical detail, such as how to enrol or what equipment a beginner might need; otherwise, the task is covered well.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The email has a clear progression: you introduce the request and recommend tennis, explain learning options, then suggest learning together before closing. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking phrases such as “There are a few good ways,” “Once you get comfortable,” and “Actually” help guide the reader. The ideas within each paragraph are generally easy to follow. Some connections are slightly mechanical or could be smoother: for example, “Actually” is not essential before the invitation, and the transition from online tutorials to regular court practice could be made more explicit. The opening and closing are appropriate, though consistent capitalisation and punctuation would make the presentation feel more polished.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a friendly email, including “full-body workout,” “beginner tennis lessons,” “basic techniques,” “forehand swings,” and “motivating.” These choices communicate the advice clearly and show some flexibility beyond basic wording. A few expressions are less natural or precise: “great full-body workout” needs an article, while “what might suits you” uses an awkward word form and construction. “Practicing regularly on the local courts” is understandable, but “regular practice at the local courts” would sound more idiomatic. Continue building natural collocations and checking word forms; this would make the vocabulary more consistently precise while preserving the warm, informal tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
There is a useful mix of simple and complex sentences, including the conditional “Once you get comfortable with the basics” and the relative clause “which might suit you” (intended). Many sentences are clear and grammatically controlled, and the message remains easy to understand. However, a few errors persist: “i hope” and “i just received” need capitalised “I”; “what might suits you” should be “what might suit you”; and “It is great full-body workout” needs an article (“a great full-body workout”). The comma in “it might be fun, if we start together” is unnecessary, and the closing should be punctuated consistently. Proofreading these details would improve accuracy across otherwise varied sentence forms.
