Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Alex,

I hope you are doing well! I am really happy that you want to learn a new sport, and i have a great suggestion for you. I think badminton would be an excellent choice becauce it is enjoyable, afforable, and suitable for beginners.

You could start by watching a few videos online to learn the basic rules and techniques. There is also a sport centre near our town that offers badmintonlessons for beginners. You could join a weekend class and practise regularly to improve your skills. Moreover, badminton is a great way to stay fit because it improves your stamina, flexibility, and also coordination.

Why don't we learn it together ? We could enrol in the same class and practise every Saturday morning. This would make the experience more enjoyable, and we could motivate each other to improve. After a few weeks, we might even become good enough to play in a friendly competition!

Let me know what you think. I'm looking forward to trying something new with you !

Best wishes,

dharni

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.5

The email addresses all three requirements clearly: badminton is recommended, practical ways to learn it are given, and you invite Alex to join you. The reasons—its suitability for beginners and benefits such as improved stamina and coordination—make the recommendation convincing. The learning advice is also specific, including online videos, a local centre, and weekend lessons. Your invitation to enrol together and practise on Saturday mornings is developed with a clear benefit: you can motivate each other. This is a strong, well-supported response. To make the advice even more fully developed, you could add a small practical detail, such as where the centre is or what equipment a beginner needs, but this is only a minor opportunity to enrich an already complete answer.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0

The message is organised in a natural sequence: you introduce the recommendation, explain how Alex can learn, propose learning together, and close with a friendly invitation. Each paragraph has a clear purpose, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “After a few weeks” help the reader follow the progression. The questions and direct address also suit an email to a friend. Cohesion is generally well managed, though a few transitions are quite formulaic, and the final invitation could connect more smoothly to the preceding advice. You could vary the links or use a brief reference such as “That’s why” to make the relationship between the benefits and your joint plan more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task and includes useful topic-specific terms such as “basic rules and techniques,” “stamina,” “flexibility,” and “friendly competition.” The tone is appropriately warm and informal, with phrases such as “Why don’t we learn it together?” However, the range is not consistently precise or natural: “excellent choice” and “great way” are broad, familiar expressions, while “badminton lessons” is joined incorrectly as one word. There are also spelling errors in “becauce” and “afforable,” which show that written word forms need closer checking. To strengthen this area, use a few more precise sport-related collocations and proofread spelling and spacing, while keeping the friendly register.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

You use a good mix of simple and more complex structures, and many sentences are accurate. For example, “You could start by watching a few videos online to learn the basic rules and techniques” uses an effective infinitive phrase, while “This would make the experience more enjoyable, and we could motivate each other to improve” combines ideas clearly. The conditional “we might even become good enough” is also well controlled. A few errors remain: the pronoun “i” should be capitalised, and there are unnecessary spaces before question and exclamation marks in “together ?” and “you !” These are minor, but careful editing would improve accuracy. Continue using varied structures while checking capitalisation and punctuation conventions.
