IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Your English-speaking friend who lives in your town has asked for your advice about learning a new sport. Write an email to your friend. In your email:

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Ram,

I hope this mail finds you well. I am writing to recommend you to start learning cricket together as you previously asked me for a recommendation.

I am recommending you the game of cricket as it is the famous sports in Nepal as of now. You will be able to learn this game quickly because of its similarity with baseball. We have to hit the ball with the bat and run to get runs which I guess is similar to the baseball.

You can join a cricket academy which is near to your home. They are always admitting newcomers so it won't be any problem for you to start learning asap. They will teach you all the basic and there will be other players who are also beginners. Hence, it will be easy for you to start learning it.

I wanted to suggest that you can join the academy and inform me. After which I would also join and we could learn together. I am sure that with my help you could nail it as you are always better at any task we perform together.

I hope to see your reply soon saying you have joined the academy.

Best regards,

Subas

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three requirements clearly: cricket is recommended, a nearby academy is suggested as a way to learn, and you invite your friend to join you. The reasons are relevant, especially the comparison with baseball and the reassurance that beginners attend the academy. Your friendly tone and closing also suit an email to a friend. The ideas are extended with some explanation, although a few points remain general: for example, you do not say what the academy’s lessons involve or how often you might practise together. Adding one or two practical details would make the advice more fully developed and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The email has a clear progression: you introduce your recommendation, explain why cricket may suit Ram, describe where to learn, and finish by proposing that you join him. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and links such as “because,” “Hence,” and “After which” help connect ideas. The overall organisation is easy to follow. Some connections are less natural or precise, however. “After which I would also join” is an awkward link to the previous sentence, and “I am writing to recommend…” followed by “I am recommending…” repeats the same point. Use a more direct transition and vary how you refer back to the recommendation to make cohesion smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task and communicates the advice clearly. Phrases such as “beginners,” “basic,” and “nail it” help convey the practical and friendly tone, while “academy” is relevant to the learning context. There are some inaccurate or unnatural choices and collocations, including “the famous sports in Nepal,” “recommend you to start learning,” and “teach you all the basic.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim to use more accurate forms and collocations, such as “a popular sport,” “recommend that you learn,” and “teach you the basics.” A little more varied vocabulary for training and practice would also strengthen the email.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the reason clause in “because of its similarity with baseball” and the conditional “with my help you could nail it.” Most sentences are understandable, and errors rarely interfere with the message. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain. For example, “it is the famous sports” has an article and number problem, while “They will teach you all the basic” needs a plural noun. The sentence beginning “After which I would also join” is a fragment rather than a complete sentence. Review articles, singular and plural forms, and sentence boundaries, and connect that final idea to the preceding sentence with a complete clause.
