Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Kale,
Hope you are doing well. I got your letter about learning a new sport. That is a good move since you have some free time after your studies. It would benifit you to relax your mind and ready for next day studies. I believe Football would be better option to consider as a sport. I know it requred a good physical activity level but since you already have some experience of running in the school this would be a good sport to start.
There are few football clubs in our town. Also there are some in the university too. You can ask from club to join with them and do a practice round first to check weather you can make it. Also there are some practice videos in YouTube. You can watch them first and practice.
Also, I can join with you to learn the sport. I haven't played after the college. So we both can watch some videos and start learning. I would love to help you to get a start. I know you will be a star like Messi one day.
Let me know what do you think about it and we can start practice early next month.
Kind regards,
Thilan.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three requirements clearly: you recommend football, explain that Kale could approach local or university clubs and use online videos, and invite him to learn with you. The advice is relevant and the friendly tone suits an email to someone you know. You also give reasons for the recommendation, including his running experience and the chance to relax after studying. These details extend the main ideas, although some advice is general: “do a practice round first” does not explain what a beginner should expect or how to choose a suitable club. The invitation to practise together is clear, and the Messi reference adds warmth, though a little more practical detail would make the advice more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The email has a clear overall progression: you introduce the recommendation, explain ways to learn, invite your friend to join you, and close with a proposed start date. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “Also” and “Let me know” guide the reader. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent arrangement, while the clear sequence shows some features of stronger organisation. However, “Also” is repeated to begin several points, making the linking somewhat mechanical. Some connections could be more explicit—for example, explain how trying a club session and watching videos could work together. A wider range of natural transitions and clearer links between suggestions would make the flow smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main advice, using relevant terms such as “football clubs,” “practice videos,” “physical activity,” and “studies.” The friendly expressions “I would love to help” and “a star like Messi” also suit the relationship. However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling, word-form, or collocation errors reduce accuracy: “benifit,” “requred,” and “weather” (for “whether”) are examples. Some phrases are also unnatural, including “ask from club to join with them” and “ready for next day studies.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, but more accurate collocations and careful proofreading would make the language more natural and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mixture of short sentences and some longer structures, including the reason introduced by “since” in “since you already have some experience of running.” Most of the message remains understandable, and you attempt to connect ideas rather than relying only on simple statements. However, errors in sentence construction and grammatical patterns are noticeable. For example, “There are few football clubs” needs an article or quantifier, and “I can join with you” uses an incorrect preposition pattern. “Let me know what do you think” also uses question word order inside an indirect question; write “what you think.” More consistent control of articles, prepositions, and embedded questions, alongside a broader range of accurate complex sentences, would strengthen this area.
