Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Albert,

Its great to hear from you and also exciting to know that you are looking to learn new sport. You are just in time as recently I come across the coaching school banner who are hosting Ski lessons for the begineers starting first week of Saturday in the September which is just beside our town union station.

I believe this could be great oppurtunity to equip with the ability to Ski in the winter as Canada has atleast 4 months of snow each year around. And this sport will keep you atheletic, motivated and outgoing where people always prefer to stay at home due to their doubt in doing snow activites outside. In addition, the learning curve willl not be steep as you already know skateboarding from the school time.

The following gear were required to start the lessons for the indoor Ski session like knee pads, ski boots & clothing, pair of ski kleets and some other related equipments which will be mentioned in the list when you signup online. The expected lessons required for begineers are listed at 7-8 but perhaps with your skating experience that should cut down to 4-5.

Perhaps, I was thinking we can signup together for the lessons as I am also interested in learning Ski. Let me know what your planning is that way we can align our timings.

Yours Truly,

Alex

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three requirements: you recommend skiing, explain that your friend can enrol in lessons at a nearby coaching school, and invite them to learn with you. The advice is relevant and supported with details, including the September start, the location, equipment and an estimate of the number of lessons. Your reasons—winter conditions in Canada and your friend’s skating experience—also make the recommendation personal. Some details, however, are not fully clear or developed: for example, “first week of Saturday in the September” makes the schedule difficult to understand, and the equipment list is presented without explaining whether the school provides guidance or what to do first. Clarifying these points and developing the practical learning steps would make the advice more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The email has a clear overall progression: you introduce the recommendation, explain its benefits, give practical information, and finish by suggesting that you enrol together. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and links such as “In addition” and “Perhaps” help connect ideas. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent overall organisation, while the clear sequence shows some features of stronger progression. However, some connections and references are not fully smooth. The long opening sentence combines the school, start date and location, making the information hard to follow; “The following gear were required” also shifts abruptly into a list. Use shorter sentences and clearer transitions between the benefits, enrolment details and equipment to make the email easier to navigate.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “coaching school,” “beginners,” “lessons,” “ski boots” and “skating experience,” so the reader can understand the subject and your recommendation. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “learning curve” and “equip with the ability.” However, noticeable spelling and word-choice problems reduce precision: “begineers,” “oppurtunity,” “atheletic,” “activites” and “equipments” are inaccurate, while “ski kleets” is unclear. Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “stay at home due to their doubt in doing snow activities.” Check spelling carefully and choose familiar, accurate collocations—for example, “take up skiing” and “outdoor winter activities”—before attempting more elaborate expressions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a reason clause (“as Canada has…”) and a relative clause (“where people always prefer…”), and the overall message remains understandable. However, errors occur across basic structures and more ambitious sentences, which limits control. Examples include “Its great” instead of “It’s great,” “you are looking to learn new sport” without an article, and “recently I come across” where the verb form does not fit the time reference. Agreement is also faulty in “The following gear were required,” and “what your planning is” needs a possessive form. Some sentences are long and difficult to control. Practise articles, verb tense, subject–verb agreement and sentence boundaries, then proofread for apostrophes and punctuation.
