Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Zaviyar,

I hope you are doing well. I am delighted to know that you are interested to learn a new sport. A physical activity plays a crucial role in physical and mental well-being. There are a number of sports that you can learn such as tennis, cricket, badminton, swimming and so on. However, I would recommend you to learn swimming. I believe that swimming would be beneficial for you because you are tall and physically fit. Your height will give you the advantage of longer strokes in water.

There is a sports club in the town with a swimming pool facility; in addition, they also offer swimming classes. They have well trained instructor. They offer classes in group as well as individually. You can opt for a group or an individual class. Additionally, the sports club is open 24/7, consequently you can choose timing according to your convenience.

I am free in evening, therefore if you want a company we can learn the swimming together. Since I always wanted to learn swimming and I believe with a friend learning a new sport will be fun. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

Kashif Khan.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The email addresses all three requirements clearly: you recommend swimming, explain that a local sports club offers classes, and invite your friend to learn with you. Your reason that swimming would suit your friend because they are tall and fit gives the recommendation some support, and the closing invitation makes your purpose clear. To develop the advice further, explain briefly what the lessons involve or how your friend could enrol—for example, contacting the club to ask about beginner sessions. The claim that height gives an advantage through longer strokes is relevant but somewhat generalised; a more specific, carefully qualified explanation would make the recommendation more convincing. Overall, the response is purposeful and complete, with room to extend a couple of supporting details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The message follows a clear sequence: you introduce the topic and recommend a sport, describe where to learn it, then suggest learning together. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking expressions such as “However,” “in addition,” and “Additionally” help connect information. The final paragraph also shifts naturally from practical advice to the personal invitation. At times, though, connectors are used mechanically or do not express the relationship precisely: “consequently” is awkward before the point about choosing a convenient time, and “therefore” is not needed in the invitation sentence. Some ideas could also be linked more smoothly rather than presented as separate facts. More natural transitions and clearer reference between sentences would strengthen the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range for a friendly email, including topic-specific expressions such as “swimming classes,” “group,” “individually,” and “longer strokes.” Phrases like “physical and mental well-being” and “according to your convenience” show an attempt to use more formal vocabulary, although the latter sounds rather formal for a message to a friend. Some word combinations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “interested to learn,” “recommend you to learn,” and “if you want a company.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit the naturalness and precision of the vocabulary. Aim for familiar, idiomatic collocations in an informal email, and choose less common expressions only when you are confident they fit the context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response includes both simple sentences and more complex forms, such as “I believe that swimming would be beneficial for you because…” and the sentence beginning “Since I always wanted…”. Most ideas remain easy to understand, but some grammatical errors persist. For example, “They have well trained instructor” needs an article and plural agreement (“a well-trained instructor” or “well-trained instructors”), while “I am free in evening” needs an article (“in the evening”). In “Since I always wanted to learn swimming,” the present perfect would be more appropriate for an interest that continues now. The sentence beginning “Since” is also a fragment as written. Check articles, verb forms, and sentence completeness, while continuing to use a mix of structures.
