Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Milan,
I hope you're doing well. I am glad to hear that you're planning to learn a new sport. I am writing to give you a piece of advice on learning a new sport.
I have been a regular member of the local sports club in my hometown. I highly recommend playing badminton because it does not require a huge investment. You'll just need a pair of badminton rackets and shuttlecock. I suggest that you join the Lions Club so you'll have a clear idea about their teaching styles. You can directly call them at reception and schedule your badminton lessons. Another thing you should know is badminton requires a regular practise and dedication to learn special techniques. We can play badminton together at this club if you don't mind. I will be available in the evening after my work at 5 PM. I believe playing together will give us a chance to spend quality time together and learn from each other. Apart from social skills, playing this sport will help you stay physically fit and healthy.
Let me know your plans! Write back soon!
Take care,
Payal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
You address all three requirements clearly: badminton is recommended, you explain how Milan can join the Lions Club and arrange lessons, and you invite him to play with you. The advice is relevant and supported with practical details, such as the equipment needed and your availability after work. You also explain a benefit of learning together—spending time together and learning from each other—which makes the invitation purposeful. The email maintains a friendly, appropriate tone throughout. To make the advice even more fully developed, you could clarify why badminton is particularly suitable for Milan, rather than mainly noting its low cost, and add a little more detail about what the lessons involve or how you would begin together.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The email follows a clear progression from greeting and purpose to the sport recommendation, practical learning arrangements, the joint invitation, and a friendly closing. Linking phrases such as “Another thing you should know” and “Apart from social skills” help connect the advice and benefits, while the final invitation is easy to identify. The ideas are generally well grouped, and the tone remains consistent. Some transitions are a little formulaic, and the main body contains several different points in one paragraph. Separating the recommendation and learning arrangements from the invitation and shared benefits would make the organisation more deliberate; varying the linking expressions would also help cohesion feel more natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a friendly advice email, including relevant terms such as “investment,” “teaching styles,” “schedule,” “dedication,” and “techniques.” These choices communicate the practical advice clearly, and the reader can understand the message without difficulty. There is some awareness of more specific language, but a few word choices and collocations are less natural: “a piece of advice on learning a new sport” is awkward in this context, and “regular practise” would be more naturally expressed as “regular practice” in this sentence. “Apart from social skills” also does not clearly express the intended benefit. More precise, idiomatic phrasing and careful attention to word forms would strengthen the range and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the conditional “if you don't mind,” the purpose clause “so you'll have a clear idea,” and the relative clause “playing together will give us a chance to spend quality time together and learn from each other.” Many sentences are accurate and punctuation generally supports readability. A few grammatical issues remain. In “You'll just need a pair of badminton rackets and shuttlecock,” the singular count noun needs an article or plural form. In “badminton requires a regular practise,” the sentence needs an article before the sport name, while the noun form also needs attention. Reviewing articles and countable nouns, alongside sentence-level proofreading, would help make the otherwise clear structures more consistently accurate.
