Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sam,

I hope you're doing great! I am extremely astonished that you're interested in learning new sport and seeking a advice from me about different kind of sport.

I think boxing is a very good sport to learn as an adult, even if you've never done it before. You can learn boxing purely for fitness, confidence, coordination, and self-defense awareness. Boxing isn't just punching, you'll learn the basic stance and improves your cardio.

There's a sport institute nearby our workplace, after work you could easily spend some time with experienced coaches to learn various techniques regarding boxing. One of my childhood friend was a part of this institute and he shared his experience with me once about boxing, since then I would also like to learn this.

It would be great if we could join together, as it can also be a very engaging form of exercise rather than simply repeating the same workout. I would visit to the institute with you tommorrow and complete all the formalities to join it so that we can start by the next week.

Take care,

Navpreet Dhillon

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You address all three points clearly: you recommend boxing, explain that your friend could attend a nearby institute and learn from experienced coaches, and invite them to join you. The reasons—fitness, confidence, coordination and self-defence awareness—make the recommendation relevant, while the final paragraph gives a clear shared plan. These ideas are generally extended and supported, although some details remain broad: for example, “learn various techniques” does not specify what a beginner might practise, and the institute’s classes or schedule are not described. The personal reference to your friend’s childhood friend adds context, but could be linked more directly to why this is a good choice for Sam. Overall, the purpose and friendly tone are clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The email has a clear progression: you introduce the advice, explain why boxing is suitable, describe where to learn it, and finish with a joint invitation and practical next steps. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and links such as “since then” and “as” help connect ideas. The closing is appropriate for a friendly email. Some connections could be smoother and more precise, however. In “One of my childhood friend was a part of this institute and he shared his experience with me once about boxing,” the relationship between the institute and the recommendation is somewhat cumbersome. The final paragraph also moves quickly from suggesting you learn together to visiting tomorrow and starting next week. More natural transitions and clearer referencing would make the progression feel more effortless.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range for the topic, including relevant terms such as “coordination,” “self-defense awareness,” “experienced coaches,” and “engaging form of exercise.” These choices communicate the benefits and practical arrangements clearly, and there is some variety beyond basic vocabulary. At times, however, word choice or collocation is inaccurate or unnatural: “astonished” does not fit the friendly context as well as “pleased” or “glad,” and “a sport institute” and “a part of this institute” are not the most natural expressions here. There are also spelling and form slips, including “tommorrow.” Greater attention to natural combinations of words and accurate spelling would make the vocabulary more controlled and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the conditional “if you’ve never done it before” and the reason clause “as it can also be a very engaging form of exercise.” Meaning remains clear throughout. Some grammatical errors are present, particularly with articles, agreement and verb forms: “learning new sport” needs an article, “seeking a advice” has an incorrect article, and “the basic stance and improves your cardio” does not maintain parallel structure. “One of my childhood friend” also needs a plural noun after “one of.” These issues do not prevent understanding, but they reduce accuracy. Review article use, subject–verb agreement and parallel constructions, then proofread longer sentences for consistent structure.
