Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Simran,

Hope you're doing well.

You're my best friend and I know from your earlier age you have a keen interest in basketball. I will recommend to pursue in that one because i think it is best to taking classes in the aforementioned sport.

To be honest, I know my neighour who took classes for the well known instructor. As he took just 6 months training and did best from his side. At present he is gold medalist at national level. So, I will definately recommed you to take a course from the same person and continue practise. As hardworks pays off.

I have one idea as well I am also thinking of joining the basketball classes from same teacher. I will recommend we both can join together and practise toghether. It will helps us a lot to learn easily amd we can also discuss pros or cons of each other without hesitation.

I am waiting for your response and see you soon.

Your's lovingly,

Jashan

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: basketball is recommended, you explain that Simran could take lessons from the instructor your neighbour used, and you invite your friend to join you. The neighbour’s six-month training and national medal give the advice some support, and the friendly opening and closing suit an email to a friend. However, the learning advice is less fully explained than the recommendation: you do not say where or how to contact the instructor, or what the classes involve. The reason basketball suits Simran is also asserted rather than developed. Adding a practical detail and a clearer link to your friend’s interest would make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The email has a clear overall arrangement: it introduces the recommendation, gives an example of the instructor’s success, then proposes learning together and closes appropriately. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and phrases such as “To be honest” and “I have one idea as well” signal transitions. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. “As hardworks pays off” is detached from the preceding explanation, while “I will recommend” is repeated and makes the progression sound mechanical. The reference to “the same person” is understandable but could be clearer by naming the instructor again. Use more natural links and connect each supporting detail directly to the advice.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main advice, including “keen interest,” “instructor,” “national level,” and “pros or cons.” These choices show some range beyond very basic wording. However, several inaccurate or unnatural expressions reduce precision, such as “pursue in that one,” “best to taking classes,” and “gold medalist at national level.” There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “neighour,” “definately,” “recommed,” and “toghether.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, but they make the email less fluent and polished. Focus on common collocations and check spelling; for example, say “take up basketball” and “a national-level gold medallist.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including “As he took just 6 months training and did best from his side” and the sentence explaining how practising together could help. The main message remains understandable, but errors occur across several structures. For example, “I know from your earlier age” has an incorrect preposition and construction, “it is best to taking classes” uses the wrong verb form, and “It will helps us” has faulty subject–verb agreement. The sentence beginning “As he took…” is also incomplete, and “I am also thinking of joining” shifts awkwardly from the surrounding future suggestion. Practise complete clauses, verb patterns after “recommend,” and agreement in future constructions.
